Phenibut: possible contamination or misrepresentation?

Last night, for the first time, I mixed 1.2 grams of phenibut with 100 mg of diphenhydramine and woke up with my first ever hangover. Neither dose separately is large for me (I've been taking benadryl for quite a while to help with allergies and sleeping).

I am not an inexperienced drinker but for some reason (not that I'm complaining) I've never experienced a hangover. I was researching online to see if benadryl had any GABA action that could have combined with the phenibut to produce such a hangover and came across this website: http://www.drugrecognitionexpert.us/forum/the-seven-drug-categories/phenibut/

A drug recognition expert there seems to imply that they tested a guy who said he'd taken phenibut and tox screen came back positive only for diphenhydramine and DXM. I'm not sure if they just don't know how to look for phenibut or if a blend of DXM and DPH is being sold as "phenibut".

Anyone have any ideas or related experiences?
 
Phenibut can be quite "heavy" and intoxicating on itself, I couldn't imagine mixing it with diphenhydramine.
 
Both are sedating, both can cause hangovers and its exceedingly common with diphenhydramine.

I agree with both of you: both substances can cause hangovers. I didn't state my question too well, so I'll clarify.

My main issue is that they do not act in the same way and in those doses neither should have given me a hangover. Finding the information on a DRE forum that the test on phenibut came back as just a mix of DXM and DPH made me think that maybe this "phenibut" I have is just DPH and the reason I experienced a hangover is that I actually took much more DPH (since the "phenibut" was actually DPH) than I meant too.

I was wondering if anyone else had a similar experience, suspected their phenibut of not being authentic (or at least heavily cut), or knew something related to the topic. I understand if this isn't an answerable topic.

Phenibut would be a weird thing to cut, it's cheap as dirt anyway. But no, it really isn't answerable.
