I remember years ago, using GHB to put me to sleep when there were stimulants in my system and it was good at putting me asleep but I would wake up 4 hours later feeling highly stimulated. So heres what I have gathered about the pharmacology: GHB is an agonist of the GABA_B receptor as well as the GHB receptor. GHBs sleep inducing properties are a result of its ability to bind to and activate the GABA_B receptor while its stimulating and euphoric properties can be attributed to its ability to bind to agonize the GHB receptor. Some people call the stimulating aftereffect of GHB, the "dopamine rebound" but another theory is that GHB binds more strongly to the GHB receptor than it does the GABA_B receptor and consequently, when most of the GHB has been metabolized, the only remaining GHB in the body will be the GHB that is still binded to the GHB receptors. I don't know which theory is more valid but I have used amphetamines for a long time and I know that the stimulatory aftereffects of GHB feels very different for me to the effects of amphetamines. So if the latter theory is correct, then GHB would be a brilliant sleep aid if it weren't for its affinity for GHB receptors.
I've read about 2 GHB analogues baclofen and phenibut which are strong GABA_B agonists but have little or no affinity for GHB receptors. I read that phenibut has no GHB activity at all so if the theory above is correct, it should make an excellent sleep aid, far superior to GHB. Has anyone here tried phenibut as a sleep aid? If so can you share your experiences. Does it induce high quality sleep like GHB does? Does it induced prolonged sleep as oppose to the maximum 4 hours of sleep that GHB induces?
