Hi guys,

OK, I've googled and drawn a blank. I've checked PIHKAL. I used the fuckin' search engine etc. Also, I tried to find the most appropriate thread for this question, and this is it.

My question is:

I recently found a natural antidepressant/mood-elevating supplement which, amongst other ingredients, contains phenethylamine and a mild maoi.

part of the blurb on this product states (quote):

Phenylethylamine (PEA) 40mg - extracted from the Cocoa bean. PEA is a phenylethylamine which facilitates feelings of love and contentment in the limbic system of the brain (the limbic system is part of the brain that controls mood).

Passionflower extract (Passiflora incarnata) 300mg - a natural monoamine oxidase inhibitor that prevent the premature break-down of PEA. Also produces a natural anti-anxiety effect by stimulating the brain’s GABA receptors.

Shulgin did some tests on the activity of straight PEA and came to the conclusion: no effects. But I presume that he meant no immediate effects. He never mentioned any tests using PEA over an extended period of time.

As this is the first time I've seen PEA plus an MAOI in a supplement, I'm curious to find out if PEA truly does or doesn't have a physiological effect (antodepressant, mood-brightening, or otherwise).

Does anyone have any links, research or info on this?

Peace,
Neo

hmm, that's interesting.

the regimen I have tried was 1mg l-Deprenyl (liquid Celepryl) and 500-1000mg chocamine powder (it has PEA content; you could also go with chocolate I suppose but consider dietary implications if that's any concern and tyramine content).
I have found that the effect seem to accrue over time - ie, the first time I tried chocamine I felt nothing, but as I was continuing with an experiment I have certainly felt a difference. I seem to recall the l-Deprenyl among other things also accumulates in the brain to higher concentrations over time, so that might have played a part. What would be nice is to try with catecholamine precursors, ie l-phenylalanine, l-tyrosine, acetyl-carnitine.
BTW, care to elucidate on the name of the aforementioned supplement/blend?

Dunno if I'm allowed to state the name of the product?? You can always PM me tho.

Actually, it's an interesting point..... I wonder if PEA itself is legal or not in most countries. I mean, it's an analog or somthing, innit? But then, deprenyl's a phenethylamine too, and that's legal!

I'm on holiday in S.Africa at the mo, and found this product from a company I buy lots of antiaging stuff from when I visit.

Interesting that you mention trying it with catecholamine precursors, 'cos this product also contains those. I think it's allowed to post ingredient lists here tho, so I'll do that.....

Per Daily Dose:

5-HTP 80mg – a precursor that elevates the neuro-transmitter, serotonin -for improving mood and sense of well-being.

L-Tyrosine 500mg – a precursor that elevates the neuro-transmitter, dopamine -for enhanced willpower, drive, mood and self-worth.

Copper 3mg (from 30mg copper 10% amino acid chelate) - assists with the conversion of dopamine into nor-adrenaline

L-Phenylalanine 800mg – a precursor that elevates the neuro-transmitter, nor-adrenaline for energy, concentration and focus.

Phenylethylamine (PEA) 40mg - extracted from the Cocoa bean. PEA is a phenylethylamine which fascilitates feelings of love and contentment in the limbic system of the brain (the limbic system is part of the brain that controls mood).

Passionflower extract (Passiflora incarnata) 300mg - a natural monoamine oxidase inhibitor that prevent the premature break-down of PEA. Also produces a natural anti-anxiety effect by stimulating the brain’s GABA receptors.

Vitamin B3 (Niacin) 50mg -enhances function of pheylalanine

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) 50mg - enhances function of pheylalanine and is require for the synthesis of dopamine and serotonin

Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic acid) 50mg – essential for energy release from the mitochondria

Folic acid 800mcg - fascilitates convertion of phenylalanine into nor-adrenaline.

Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin form) 1000mcg – methyldonor which enhances mood

Panax (Koren) ginseng extract 80mg – an adaptogen that enhances mood, energy, sexual performance and stress-coping ability.

Ginkgo biloba 80mg – supplies oxygen to the brain for energy and is a natural mono-amine oxidase inhibitor that prevents the breakdown of serotonin, nor-adrenaline, dopamine and PEA.

Just noticed that it states that Ginkgo Biloba is also a MAOI. I didn't know that either!

I once took 100mg of PEA while on 5mg/day selegiline which should inhibit its breakdown significantly. I felt jittery, some anxiety and restlesness. It wasn't pleasant at all and I was glad when the effects subsided.

^ Peripheral amphetamine like effect... PEA is a pipe dream. Unless you want to inject it into your brain directly.

I'm certainly not. Doesn't look like anyone else is. Maybe you are?

shulgin was giving a comment on psychedelic effect, not as to the presence of any activity at all and if you read the extensions and commentary he even said that wasn't the exact words given.
pea is a monoamine and an inhibitor if that enzyme might produce effects when combined, but because it is too polar (water soluble ) it wont be able to find it's way into the central kingdom, so logically pea is being attacked by some other enzyme that changes it's structure and whatever chemical that is is what is producing effects (bad ones too as far as i can gather).
although if your body was to depolarize pea so that it could pass the blood-brain-barrier then once in the brain, enzymes could possibly change that chemical back to pea and make it ready for use .
this is all very interesting stuff to ponder isnt it ?
