Pharmacist over filled a script - What would you do?

I hope this thread is in the right place, but I wanted to get a few opinions on what I should do about a situation I was in today.

I went to get my normal zolpidem script filled and there was a new pharmacist on at the pharmacy I always go to and she's actually issued two times more than the prescription was for and I didn't realise until I got home not too long ago. I'm worried that i'll either get in trouble for someone elses stuff up, or whether they would just adjust the repeat on the prescription next time I go in? I've had a pharmacist who has thrown in a few extra due to different pack sizes once because he said it was easier for him, but double quantity is going to be much more noticeable.

Has anyone else had this happen and what did you do? Should I call them and let them know, or am I better to just keep my mouth shut unless they mention it? I checked the script and I could see on there that they haven't marked it down as 2 refills in one go and the labels say the amount there *should* be, so i'm not sure what the next step would be.

Again, if this is in the wrong place or if i'm breaking any rules, I apologise. I'm just getting a little worried and I don't want to be freaking out next time I go back!

As always, I appreciate any feedback from anyone, so thanks for taking the time to read.

Time before last.... the pharmacy gave me 3 extra suboxones and i was in relief because he started to lower my dosage from 3 a day to 2 and 3/4....man i couldnt take that bac it was a blessing

This happened to me several times. When my shrink was weening me off valium, he would write me scripts for very limited and often obscure numbers of valium on the basis of when I would next see him, and because he didn't want me to abuse it. At least twice I got the full 50 tablets instead of 12, or 25. I never took it back but then again I was never obliged to go back to the same pharmacy; I just took the next script somewhere else.

Are you obliged to go back to the same pharmacy? If so, why can't you just keep your use below the intended amount until you next go back - if they notice when you go back and say you have to use what you got last time for twice as long, you'll be ok. If they don't notice, you can play.

This certainly isn't appropriate for OD but we can try it in AusDD... it's up to the AusDD mods if they'd like this kept open or not however.

OD>>AusDD

imo ... think of it as gettn lucky.

its happened to me once n i mentioned it over the fone n they just said sorry and thanks for lettn them know n theyd check n see who filled it n deal with them, or sumfin along the lines. plus i cldnt see u gettn in much trouble , most people dont count theyr pills unless it looks like theyr runnin low or sumfin id imagine, or realise at the end wen they still have doses leftover when its passed re-scripting time....i know iv gotta full bottle as soon as i hear the twist top snap lol . tho iv received 1 opened bottle of benzos once from pharmacy, tho was nothing missing i still replaced em str8 away, who knows who clda had theyr ballsweat ridden hands on my pills !!

We've had threads on this before... I think you will be fine. It's their mistake, and many pharmacies have imperfect stock counts for their dispensaries.

I bet someone got in trouble for that... or they fudged the numbers. S8 stock counts and record keeping need to be perfect, and if an audit finds problems they have a lot of explaining to do.

ETA: If they dispensed it as two of your refills at one, you would have had to sign two prescription sheets and one of them would have had an 'immediate supply necessary' sticker on it, though it is usually small and not noticeable.

This JUST happened to mr yesterday, I get RX'ed 90 1mg Klonopins/month and 30 Ambiens w/ 1 refill every 2 months. I'm supposed to take 3 pills of klonopin / day, but the pharmacist got confused and gave me my 90 klonopin WITH 3 more refills!
Now I didn't say nething, but only b/c I paid in cash and didn't use insurance so there is no record of what I was given at any other pharmacy (next month my Dr will give me another Rx and if I fill @ a diff place I can keep refilling at the other pharmacy and get double the Rx'ed amount for next 3 months!)

I wouldn't say anything if u paid w/out insurance, if u used insurance, I'd be concerned that if u fill nxt months script they'll tell u that u got a 2 month supply...but not an issue if u pay cash elsewhere....)

-"SpiritFolk",
What did you mean above? Are you asking if the type and amount of drug would change one's actions, should change one's actions? Or did u mean it as a statement and not a question?
I only ask b/c Zopidem and Klonopin are both controlled substances...

^ They aren't really 'controlled substances' in the same way that morphine or oxycodone are considered controlled substances. The latter are S8 drugs and are strictly monitored and the stock counts have to be perfect down to the tablet. In most states benzodiazepines might be monitored by the Drugs of Dependence Unit, but pharmacy stock counts aren't subject to such restrictions.

But isn't that the problem? For example: if the prescription says take 1 pill per day, and someone is given 60 pills by accident instead of 30 pills, then SHOULD the pharmacist say upon refilling the Rx in 1 month "you were given 60 so you should have 30 pills left" that person would be screwed. Just a thought, but like its been said, the pharmacy will most likely not want to admit or call attention to any mistakes they made...

Before going nuts n having a bender, just hold on to them till next refil, dose as normal. Go to pharmacy, if theytell you you got extra and, have to use it up, no probs. If they dont realise, paetytime

I figure this is what i'll do, i'll go and fill the next repeat when I normally would if I was given the correct amount and if they say anything, i'll get them to mark it down as two repeats and take one repeat off my script.

It was for zolipidem/ambien, usually get 28 every 14 days, but they gave me 56 and on my repeat script, they have only marked down they've filled one, so it is exactly if they'd done it properly as far as the script goes. I certainly won't be going on a bender, i've had my time going nuts on these pills and now have really cut down and use them somewhat more responsibly, but i'm broke at the moment so I should be able to stash most of them away for a rainy day or when I cant afford to fill one of the repeats.

I think I know exactly how it happened, I know the brand of the medication this pharmacy uses primarily actually also come in boxes of 7 pills, so she's given me 4 boxes, but the boxes she gave me contains 14 pills each.

I know the pharmacy would probably realise when they do a stock count and find they've got missing pills, but I guess the only consolation is that the drug isn't as risky or such a drug of dependance like morphine or other strong opiates and other things although it is a drug that is abused quite a bit.

Thanks to everyone who gave your input, I appreciate it.

I only signed one script, but didn't notice anything unusual about it at all. THe sticker they put on the box itself said it was only 28 pills, so maybe that's what will be entered in their system as far as they were concerned. I've read alot of stories that zolpidem is among the highest prescribed medications in the USA, so i'm assuming it's the same here and that anyone who had a script for the same medication on that day would possibly help my case and make it harder to see who was given extra medication (not that I agree with 'fudging' the records, i just don't want to get myself into any hot water)

eed,
OR avoid any and all problems by taking your next Rx to a diff pharmacy / chain of pharmacy and pay "out of pocket", ----> without using insurance

Once I got 50 valium instead of 25, I kept it and was never confronted by the prescribing doctor who I still see occassionally nor any of the pharmacists and I have been back. I really think you should just chalk it up as luck and not mention shit.

Thanks drug_mentor, I'll just play dumb if they mention it and might get the next one done at a different place like waldo suggested. Luckily over here in Australia, we don't have to worry about insurance issues documenting everything to the extent other places are with the way our healthcare system works. I think the pharmacies would each have their own records of anything dispened to you at that particular place, but I don't think they cross reference with other pharmacies, but I could be wrong. I know it may be an entirely different ballgame if it was a controlled substance in large amounts but i've never had any pharmacy ask me about a script i've filled anywhere else.

.

Wow, I didn't know Dr's could prescribe 28 stilnox's, even though they boxes don't come in 28's. and give you a repeat for another 28. That's the main thing I dislike about stilnox, only 14 per prescription compared to 25 temaze. But it seems I could be prescribed in amounts of 28.

I"m going to see if this dick of a Dr i'm seeing now will do this for me.
