I have (among other disorders) social anxiety. For a while now I have been on medication for it, both antidepressives and anxiolytics. Life is so different now that I can actually function among people. However being the worrysome person that I am, lately I have got very afraid of ending up in a situation where I get a lot of tolerance to the medications I'm on and they no longer doing it for me. This worry has especially been fueled ever since I got on xanax as I know most people gain tolerance to benzodiazepines quickly.
Because of this and the fact that my anxiety isn't truly dreadful but more like a constant pain in the butt I have chosen to take the anxiolytics PRN instead of daily that the doctor ordinated. I try not taking any given drug more than twice a week and try to switch between the ones I have to minimize the risk of gaining tolerance. This also has the benefit of being able to save up pills for a rainy day.
Anyways: When researching tolerance, I have come across some people reporting permanent tolerance to various types of drugs. And this is the subject I wanted to discuss. It seems like there is no concrete fact on if this actually happens and if so, why it happens. Considering many people on here are using drugs to a much larger extent than me I would like to ask you all some questions.
*Have you noticed persistent tolerance to a drug even after being off it for months or years?
*If so, what drug?
*Also if you answered yes to the first question, did you abuse said drug for some duration/took large doses of it?
From the reports people has made that I've been reading, it seems most of the time when permanent tolerance seems to have occured, the person has been abusing the drug for a long time and taking ridiculous amounts of it while doing so. Still this worries me. It probably seems to you all like I should just take a chill pill and relax but this is a big deal to me. It's extremely important for me to know I can trust and rely on my medications even in the future.
