Perfect Set & Setting or Good Enough?

This probably isn't specific to psychedelics but I am curious what other folks do with regard to set and setting: Don't trip unless it's perfect or go with what's available? I tend to wait until things are perfect although I am considering the virtue of going with a "good enough" set and setting and hoping that I can avoid the trip going really bad.

What do you folks do?

I am one to wait until i know i am 100% comfortable and just by you conceding that its not going to be perfect for you, id wait. I've tripped a lot, im tripping right now lol...and though ive done it in all sorts of situations i always try to make sure my set & setting is exactly what I want. Sometimes what i want is some unassuredness in whats next, but if im prepared as that for my setting and im happy with it then its all good.

Good enough. In other words, sufficiently good and non-stressed mood to have a chance of a positive experience, and no major responsibilities or commitments for the duration of the trip. The latter is generally pretty easy to satisfy, albeit generally having to be at night these days; the former is much more variable, and can actually be quite a restrictive criterion for me recently, due to work-related stress. There have been times in the past when I would feel good enough to trip most weeks, and hopefully will be in the future; recently, it's more like a few times a year.

As long as I feel comfortable where I am and who I'm with before I trip, then I'll take my drugs. My mindset is always in a good one as well, so I've only had one bad trip to date - well, not really a bad one, just a bad ride for about 30 minutes...after that, it went back to an amazing trip :).

Kind of a silly question as you would never be able to judge the set & setting to be perfect before the whole experience has gone down...

imho it depends very much on how good you know yourself and how familiar you are with having an opened up mind and of course it also depends a lot on the dose and the substance

a few months back i would have never taken acid or similar psychs in the center of a big city, today i can tell you that one of my most rewarding experiences was taking 2ce alone in the center of a 4 million city ;) and that is far from the "perfect setting" for most people... imho set is by far more important than setting :)

for your first trips it's probably best to stick to the classical guidelines about set and setting, i'm willing to bet there's a huge thread to be found about this topic in this forum ;)

good vibes

same here.. hi leftly. how are you buddy? yeah anyway. so far me and my bro have done it indoors, on the university campus a few times which is cool cos they got a nature reserve. we've walked around aimlessly in the streets in the middle of the night looking for rizzla and a light to roll up a j to keep us going.. we seen a lot. our last adventure was at the beach and we came across some wicked cool glowing jellyfish and this mouldy clay which we coverred ourselves in. so yeah. any setting goes. but a new setting is always a fun one

hello there!
my pet cat says it only does mushrooms when it feels comfortable enough with the setting. that doesnt mean having necessarily the right temperature and a certain number of clouds in the sky, but more like a minimum of conditions: no phone, no work, no worries for the day, nice weather, some food and drinks... other than that, it likes letting the visuals paint the setting...

Lots of good feedback! Very interesting to see that some people wait for the perfect set and setting and that some go for good enough.

My mind set is far more important than setting for me. Crowded public spaces do not cause me as much paranoia as some people. I have happily tripped in a 50 000 strong rugby crowd and I'm happy to wander the city streets at night. It probably has something to do with my girlfriends reliance on me to guide her through trips so I have built a tolerance as such. My sanity is still hanging on by a thread yet I have an ability to somehow but on the sober shades and deal with reality for 5 or 10 minutes. That all been said I would hate to waste a trip in a poor environment. If you worry too much about the "perfect" setting you may wig out when the unexpected occurs.

A stable and happy mindset is essential for me. I try to eliminate any nagging doubts or stress in my life for the few days leading up to an adventure. I temporarily lost my car keys just before we were due to trip a few weeks ago and I am glad I made the decision to trip another day. A few hours of head fuck isn't worth it in my opinion. I'd rather have predictable happy experiences than stress and anxiety.

I advise people to wait until they are in a positive state of mind and a comfortable place to trip. But I admit to be impatient once and a while and just eating some psychedelics whenever I get the urge. Its really hard for me to sit on psychedelics for long periods of time. But I find the best trips are the ones that take place after a really long break and when everything is in place beforehand.

Set is key; setting is not highly important. Of course, I will strive for ideal conditions in both, but if my head feels like it's fine and wants the acid, then I'll settle for decent conditions. I've gotten used to tripping in city centres and around lots of people so it doesn't bother me THAT much, as long as there's excitement in other forms and SOME inspiring stuff to look at and wonder.
