๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ Social ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ PD Social Thread 2022-2025 v. Year of the Phenethylamine

Personally I love being a Cook, I've been doing it so long now and have a good day in the kitchen. I'm never gonna be rich but I'm happy, my girlfriend is a pre-school teacher and she is happy too. We hope to have a nice condo in a few years for us and the kids and then I will be set. Like @Img_9999 said your quality of life is important and being satisfied with how you spend your days.

A perk for me is I pretty much never have to pay for groceries unless I choose to, mainly I just buy breakfast stuff cuz I make two meals a day from the Restaurant. I'm working six days a week now so when I'm off on Saturdays me and my girl just go out to eat most of the time or she cooks something.

I spend so much time making people's meals all day I just kinda wanna chill when I'm off. I made more money when I worked in Manhattan but if I stick with this company there is room above me, I actually got promoted to head of the kitchen the other day which is pretty cool. I'll never make 100k a year but that's okay, I like the people I work with and I'm good at this.

As long as I bring home money and stay faithful to my woman she will be happy with me, and like I said in a few years things are gonna be looking pretty nice for us. Her sister is a realtor and is gonna help us get a mortgage for are place, I'm gonna transfer to a different location within the umbrella of our company. Which is another positive about the place I cook for now.

I experimented with the new Stable Diffusion image generator (can be tried at https://beta.dreamstudio.ai/ and some other web sites) to create sci-fi horror images, and it produced these alien physiology drawings when given the prompt "nervous system machine aliens". These particular two images were easy to vectorize with Inkscape and convert to higher resolution images with a neat end result.

I'm still retardedly high from earlier eating 4x 25e-NBOH hits and snorting mdma. I've been stupid high all night. I've been cold and doing dumb shit in bed all night beside the air conditioner.

The freaking cock roaches are carrying me away. Still tripping.

Still tripping too much for all these roaches to be around lol

Man, be careful, MDMA + NBOMes has caused a lot of the deaths from NBOMes, and NBOHs are not far off.
I've flipped several times now with NBOH derivatives and mdma and so far it's been nothing but love.

I'm still REALLY freaking high. I've been snorting mdma and vaping delta 8. I just got a new Texas Poundcake indica cartridge.

I suspect that's not the first time you've opined this, and by now it's become a reflex whenever discussing the prospect of seeking a new employer as a career advancement move. I think there's a critical flaw in the assumption thatโ€”because you've witnessed others leave for more stressful rolesโ€”the same fate would only be true for you as well. As if this were the only possible outcome. Remember: when you go on an interview, you should be interviewing and investigating the company as much or more as they are interviewing you
For sure I can self sabotage. Thanks for that. i do, I think we all do. But it is true the last 3 people tried to run away from themselves and find a more fairer place to work and they got a lesson. It is also true one can find balance right where they are sometimes. But also maybe I have been using that as an excuse. I think I am waiting for someone to tell me their new job is much better now too. Not sure.

I don't know all the particulars the way you do, but this is generally an unsafe assumption to make. They can always hire someone new.
That is true to an extent but I am willing to bet Xorkoth has such detailed knowledge it would hurt if he left. I am in the same situation. I helped develop the systems I work in. They have many clients and I am the last of a 7 people team. The last guy on one of the other systems left a few months ago and clients threatened to leave due to work not being done. They pay that guy $400 an hour to give some of his hours at night to try and train as he has a new day job lol. It is a mess when a knowledgeable guy leaves. But I just don't think any upper management ever knows what they are doing.

I agree on life balance. I could double my salary but as long as I keep learning I am ok where I am for now. But really I saw too much to be fully happy with how companies get run these days by morons. And you all know what I am talking about as a company grows.

I'm not saying the company would fall apart without me, they'd hire someone new (for what I'm asking, minimum), and after a lot of time spent getting up to date, while they have to keep executing an ever-increasing amount of work as if there was no interruption, they'd get someone up to speed with what I'm working on. It would take a hell of a lot of effort for someone to learn how things are run and the ins and outs of all the programs and modules I've created that we use every day. Effort and time. They wouldn't be able to hire someone for what they're paying me now, that's for sure. So my assumption is that they will give me what I am asking, or close to it. If I suddenly start making an extra $30k per year, that would be huge for me and I'd be happy for the time being. We also get yearly raises and bonuses again now, so there's that, too, and they have been flying me out to company headquarters every so often to spend a week with senior management to talk about the future of where development will go.

It just wouldn't make sense for them to let me go, only to have to hire someone else at a salary comparable to what I'm asking, only to throw a huge wrench into the smooth operation of the company for 6 months, at least, and eventually end up where they're at with me, if they're lucky - minus the 15 years of specific experience doing exactly what my role is, and working relationships with both sides of the business that only I have, since I came from the one side and am the only one who has crossed over.

Anyway...

I've been given a Sept 15th launch date for V1 in production. Today I started overhauling one of the systems (inserting into/out of module libraries) to be more restrictive for non-admin users. That should be done tomorrow, then it's on to dozens of Jira tickets for the reporting system. It's a web portal to an interactive report on the results of the automated surveys the users create, which has to download to a Powerpoint with native charts. Because market researchers love Powerpoints. It all works already but there is a lot of polishing to do, and implementation of some new question types.

the last 3 people tried to run away from themselves and find a more fairer place to work and they got a lesson.
Let's unpack that. Firstly, you say the "last 3 people tried to run away from themselves." What do you mean by "run away from themselves?" Do you mean they tried to run away from the company? How does one run away from oneself, even in the metaphorical sense?

Isn't it also more than a little alarming that three people (at least) were attempting to run away? That's not a good sign. And why were they running? โ†’ To find a "more fairer" place of employment. Redundant superlatives aside, do you see what's wrong with that statement? It would bother me to work some place where the devs are so unhappy, they're desperately leaving to find better jobs.

And what's the "lesson they got"? That they were foolish for seeking a better life? If anything, the lesson they should've learned is not to make hasty decisions in taking new employment and to investigate a company a bit more thoroughly before signing on.

I am waiting for someone to tell me their new job is much better now too.
I wouldn't hold my breath. And where's the logic in that? What happens to those other devs really has fuck-all to do with your career. I mean, do what you want; I don't really care that much. I'd just like to see people like you and @Xorkoth not get chewed up and spit out by the Tech industry.

That is true to an extent but I am willing to bet Xorkoth has such detailed knowledge it would hurt if he left.
Maybe though he also made it seem like he was somewhat new to the profession and was accepting less pay in exchange for being able to cut his proverbial teeth, as it were. He also indicated that he organizes and comments his code in a highly functional, dev-friendly way. A wiki should probably be developed, and perhaps it is, but regardless, it's unwise to overestimate one's technical prowess and/or value within someone else's company.

Also tech stays moving; this is why Agile methodology was invented. Don't rest on your laurels or you'll get passed up quickly.

I am in the same situation. I helped develop the systems I work in.
Yeah this is a scary prospect โ€“ are these systems open- or closed-source? My guess is the latter or else you wouldn't be developing the systems you work in. Companies who do this tend to be really insular and it gives them an advantage to counter the threat of knowledgeable developers leaving the company. I know people who work for Bloomberg, for example. Their software systems are all proprietary, built in-house. So devs will be there for five or six years and suddenly realize they haven't developed open source, common language coding skills. They're whizzbang at Bloomberg, but they can't take that anywhere, and they're ultimately stuck. At least they pay well!

They have many clients and I am the last of a 7 people team.
You're the last? Jesus Tittyfucking Christ, what is wrong with that company?

The last guy on one of the other systems left a few months ago and clients threatened to leave due to work not being done.
And? That's a management problem and a bargaining chip in your favor if anything.

They pay that guy $400 an hour to give some of his hours at night to try and train as he has a new day job lol. It is a mess when a knowledgeable guy leaves. But I just don't think any upper management ever knows what they are doing.
Lol, "ever"? I cannot agree with you on that. There are some very savvy CTOs out there with some brilliant start-ups I've met over the years, sometimes they're one of the founders, evenโ€ฆ I agree it can be a mess when someone knowledgeable leaves, but that's partly because the company didn't create a knowledge baseโ€”like a searchable wikiโ€”to assist in onboarding new hires. Ultimately it's something of an HR failure.

I agree on life balance. I could double my salary but as long as I keep learning I am ok where I am for now.
Continued learning is requisite for the field and par for the course. One has to stay up on new technologies as they emergeโ€ฆ again: Agile methodology and all thatโ€ฆ Get the compensation you deserve, I say.

But really I saw too much to be fully happy with how companies get run these days by morons. And you all know what I am talking about as a company grows.
That's a very cynical view of things, my guy. Not every company is run by morons. But I do understand the certain loss of personal touch that comes from a small startup growing into a larger, more corporate entity with stricter rules regarding conduct, language, work relationships, etc. I chalk it up to growing pains of a particular corporate type. There are worse things and it usually follows major financial successes, so it's a sign of good things in another sense.

Which festival?
Meakusma, small one, maybe like 700 people a day? We've been wanting to go for years but it never worked out. We just went the one day, still gotta drive all the way home....

Excellent festival imo, quite cheap, tons of artists, starts at like 10-11AM and ends at 6AM, they've got like 50 different couches everywhere and there are even 4 more venues a couple 100 meters away.

They've got some art stuff, music guided walks in nature, some great restaurants nearby, a nice green environment... I wish I could've just opened my tent and just jumped in there and do it all over tomorrow =D

Last of the summer festivals though, I was planning on going to Barcelona soon, never been

I just checked out the website (would it kill them to use SSL?) and it looks like a really cool festival. Do you live in Belgium or a neighboring country? Hopefully the drive isn't too long.

Developers are still using this garbage?

Sure, why not? It works and it's cheap as fuck

I was about to ask what CSS is and how much you've had ๐Ÿ˜‚

*Programming language, not a psychedelic research chemical. Got it.

It's a set of cascading rules that web sites use for browsers to know how to display them. And I've had entirely too much :trippy:
