That big NPS motivations study that was plastering the forums a year ago has been published.

I don't know how many of you participated (I did). Interesting results--basically consistent with what we tend to claim: hallucinogens are the most widely but least frequently used, hallucinogens and dissociatives are most heavily used for introspective or spiritual purposes, and hallucinogens have an exceedingly low addictive potential while dissociatives have a moderate addictive potential. Also 30% of participants had used 9 or more NPS in the last two years whereas only 15% had used 1 and 15% had used 2. They argue that this, coupled with the choices of NPS used by participants, the reasons stated for their use, and the high reporting of both positive and negative effects, suggests a strong motivation towards experiencing a variety of
states, rather than experiencing pleasurable states.
Of course it also speaks to me that there's a huge selection bias--not only in the study's limitation to bluelight but also in the likelihood that only more "active" members took the time to participate. I do suspect that this is a self-selecting crowd (frontiersmen, "psychonauts") but also that it's a group in something of an echo chamber: we have a strongly stated forum ethos of harm reduction and those of us who are more active members likely have a highly developed consensus ideology about our drug use. The surprising percentage of people who reported making their own drugs (1.9%... low but still likely not representative) also suggests self-selection IMO. I wonder how different the results might have if taken from a different forum--particularly a non-English-speaking forum like flashback or hyperreal.
Other things I noted: 50% of participants were from the USA, and participants consumed less alcohol per year than the statistical average (6 liters). I'm also disappointed to see that 25i-NBOMe was the most frequently reported NPS psychedelic ( ~10% ), although 4-aco-dmt and 2c-b were close behind.
