Do you guys take any supplents, amino acids or herbs to aid in recovery...

I have recently gotten into this trend after much reading, Reddit and loungecity time..

I currently take..

d,l phenylalanine- The L isomer is the amino acid used in the L-dopa to dopamine and norepinephrine I chain, while the D isomer is an enkaphalinase inhibitor, which stops the breakdown of of the bodies natural endorphins.

Kava 6 kavalactone extract- for relaxation..Gaba activity throu calcium ion channels.

CBD- for back pain, brain inflamation from drug use, stress and insomnia

Gaba- said not to cross BBB but t I notice effect could be peripheral modulation and also lowers cortisol

Happy camper stress breakers- lots of Gaba compounds, l theanine, valarian root, passion flower, lemon balm, l tryptophan for serotonin and even lithium

B complex

Multivitamins

Been looking into Magnesium, black seed oil, Ashwagandha, gotu cola and a few others...

Experiences and any supplement s you take?

How do you know if your brain is inflamed ??
When you say gaba what do you mean ? Is it just straight gaba? I didnt know they had that.
I was taking a nootropic blend
Choline
DMAE
Piracetam
That worked VERY WELL , but the effects started to fade and I realized I left it in the sun in a hot room for a long period of time ....
Pretty much killed it but made a huge difference for me in the month I was taking it.
Also vitamin B 3 and 8

I don't know for sure if my brain is inflamed but heavy prolonged drug use stress and insomnia are all things that can cause brain inflamation.

They do indeed make Gaba but it is said to not cross the BBB except possibly in those individuals with compromised BBB. Most effectives are thought to be periphreal, such as lowering cortisol levels, which if left unchecked for long periods of time causes brain inflamation. If you wake up every day with morning panic chances are you have high cortisol levels.

I must however say that I am by far no expert when it comes this stuff and have merely become desperate enough to begin the research and self experimentation.

I take a multivitamin as well although I should probably go back to taking a B complex due to recent heavy drinking. Epsom salt baths feel amazing - apparently magnesium can be absorbed through the skin which is why they feel so much better than just a plain water bath.

I used to love salt baths during wd, moved to a house with no baths only shower cubicles.....sad face.

Thanks for bringing this topic up . I've been wondering what could help calm the body naturally. I have some kava kava and 5-htp here. I tried my regular green source multi vitamin with high b6,b12, b1 with others . The b6 wired me up a d brought my WD'S up a couple notches. Garden of life green shake mix is my only supplement with no wired up feeling that gives me natural energy. If you live in the south US or midwest US a weed that grows in the fields called palmer aramath ( pig weed ) is supposed to be a super food that provides great energy and brain support, fyi. Let's keep this thread going guys .

It’s no magic bullet, but Victim C (either the calcium or sodium version) seems to be helpful for some opioid withdrawal symptoms.

Caffeine I really don’t recommend, just because of how it can also exacerbate the shits. Matcha makes a pretty good substitute though, as does tea generally.

Drinking juices made from ginger, pepper and leafy greens really makes me feel good in withdrawal. Carrot and watermelon juice is also really refreshing. Watch out for coconut water, but if you’re constipated from too much loperamide or buprenorphine or methadone or something it’s good to have.

Fiber. Lots of fiber. Fiber for recovery :)

It can cause diarrhea if taken to excess. It takes a bit though, so a little should be fine.

It’s pretty good for balancing constipation out for me. When I’m in withdrawal coffee is worse for diarrhea (unless there are comfort meds, then it’s fine). On meds or using coconut water is probably not a bad thing at all. It’s soemthing I really enjoyed drinking on buprenorphine, methadone and other treatments.

What else have you found helpful cj? Not helpful? I always appreciate your perspective :)

I've been taking 2 of those gummy multi vitamins since beginning methadone treatment and, I've gotta say, I feel great. Not sure if it's only that i'm on the proper dose or a combination of the vitamins and that, but I've been feeling great the past few days without any of the typical methadone side effects. The gummy's have a large amount of b vitamins in them and my energy levels have been decent considering I'm on methadone. Coffee always helps, though. I can't stay away from it ever, even in full blown wd

I spent years researching and taking different supplements/nootropics and honestly feel better without them. One of my closets has an entire shelf full of the vitamins, herbs, powders, etc. I've tried, and nothing in there ever really provided long-lasting support and recovery. Supplements may help at the beginning of recovery from heavy drug use, however I believe nothing can replace exercise, sleep and diet in healthy individuals.

The only thing I take with any regularity now is l-theanine with coffee and calcium/magnesium/zinc before bed on occasion.

A pro testosterone supplement is good for men with PAWS. I actually take testosterone shots every two weeks so I get a good boost from it .I skipped my shot for the rough acute WD's and took it today and omg , what a difference. I feel like a man again. My mood went from sad to happy in 6 hrs after my shot.

I'm that guy with the drawer full of everything! Hundreds and hundreds of dollars worth of capsules and tinctures of amino acids, adaptogens, vitamins, herbs.... you name it. If it's been mentioned as something useful that aids in opiate and alcohol withdrawal, I've bought it. And I don't feel a damn thing from any of them.

(not counting kratom, of course)

Actually, Kava Kava works for sure as an anxiolytic. But if you have capsules, you'll need to take like 7 or 8 of em, and even then you are flirting with bad nausea. Powdered kava is much better. I think Passionflower might also work, but hard to say.

For sleep, large doses of valerian root combined with large amount of Tryptophan has helped me sleep and sleep through the night.

What's your experience with kava? You mention that is a good anxiolytic. Does it help with sleep as well? I'm really looking to curtail my benzo use. Some internet sites like webmd make it sound like you'll instantly fry your liver taking it. But I'm already frying my liver with alcohol anyway.

There were some good supplements on jet.com

I can't remember the name of it but it's tumeric. It has to either be taken w black pepper or be made with black pepper on it. The pepper causes absorbtion.

Apparently the tumeric supplement is great for inflammation. I really want to try it.

I've always been curious if Calm Support is helpful.

I did see someone singing the praises of Calm Support in a thread somewhere, but exactly where eludes me.

When I was vegetarian, I cooked a lot of Indian dishes and used a lot of turmeric in my cooking. It's a great spice and a yummier way of getting it in your system as opposed to taking it in a pill =D

The best supplements I have found this far are

Magnesium- sleep and anxiety

Zinc at the upper range- has done miracles for my depression. It normalizes testosterone and is actually a DRI at higher doses

Kava kava- anxiety

CBD full spectrum- lots of stuff.. my back pain

I was actually blown away by how psychoactive the essential trace element zinc is... I accidently took too much the first day when I tried to factor in the chelated percentage and bioavailability. I wound up taking 75mg of zinc...lol.. I was surprised when 2hrs later I felt like I was on cocaine without the edge... repleat with Grandiose thoughts and insomnia. It lasted forever. Really amazing and actually leads one to ask "what exactly is a drug?".

I have found that the zinc is aided by the amino acid d,l phenylalanine, which is the first in the dopamine conversion chain.

Fun with essential nutrients...lol... I might add that I have a shit diet of mostly fast food, poor digestion from opiates and my sleep has been consquently fucked but the more I research the more I'm convinced that mineral deficiency plays a huge part in addiction and other mood disorders. The world is so full of processed foods and I don't even have a stove where I live
