Looking to grow some of my own opium poppies. I've came across Papaver Paeoniflorum, and just wanted to check if it shares tbe same makeup as standard Somniferum.

From everything I've read, it is just a variant / cultivar of Somniferum, and not it's own unique species.

So, can anyone answer my question? Want to make sure, before I buy the seeds.

Hi!

Papaver paeoniflorum is just a BS name they use to get around using Papaver somniferum (Opium poppy) in places like the US.
The peonies have more petals than and are more like a pom pom than a 'regular' flower but they're still 100% opium poppy and produce opiates.

Just look online for Papaver somniferum seeds.

Watch out. Growing them is a Grey area. However, if you get caught and the Feds out about growing for non ortimen find too much; you could get nailed for not only possession( if you harvested the Opium, Manufacturing with intent to distribute, and other charges.

Depending on the Judge( there may also be Federal mandatory minimums which are long. With only the possibility of a plea bargin). The more money you have for a lawyer or lawyers and past convictions can get you less time possibly but still destroy your life. As in hard time and you will have to probably do 85% of sentence, with good behavior.)
Not worth it.)

Don't be the 3rd person caught in America ( if you live here) to be found with opium poppies growing for manufacturing. ( live science claims only 2 others caught. Because of labor intensive and low yields) .

Also there have been attempts to try to weaken the commercially sold seeds to produce little opium). The are some who grow them legally. But it varies by state and amount. Some paces allow for some for ornamental purposes. Some states, no. Growing for production and being caught is rare because few do it. you also need a fairly large amount. If you do grow and use them for extracting opium, you could face serious time in prison.

If you are a person who follows guidelines and not for the production of Opium, you could be OK in some areas. This is not your intent. It ain't worth it. you need a lot for a decent yield. That also means big trouble. Decades in prison. Sounds like a bad idea? So few do it. but a sea of those beautiful Poppy Somniferum, like in The Wizard Of Oz. Is beautiful, but it could get you in trouble also. Are you American? Watch out. Best not to try it.
