Panicky breathing/airway congestion from smoking marijuana - never a problem before!

I was googling this very topic when I came upon this thread, with a bunch of great responses. I hope I'm not reviving a dead thread here, but I'd like to reflect upon my experience to.

I had been a heavy pot smoker from about 2000-2006. I mean real heavy, as in...pick up an ounce and it was gone in a few days to a week. Anyways, I had been experimenting with some other drugs at the time (extacy, shrooms, coke) I had started having my panic attacks. I can trace it all back to one event. In the summer of '06 I went to a party with my girlfriend at the time, and did a particularily large batch of shrooms in a depressing 80's style basement apartment, and had a terrible trip for about 8 hours.

I had smoked weed for about a month after that until I started having panic attacks, which I know where linked the that event. So I tried cutting back, and I kept getting attacks... I'd get anxiety, my throat would swell up, I'd sweat, my mouth would be drier than usual, my breathing would be faint.

It's been approx. 3 years since then, and I still can't smoke weed, because of the same problem. I've pretty much quit (I smoke once, on New Years, thats it.).

It's a very good probability that what the others and myself here have experience is what you're going through. Unfortunately, I dont think any of us have found a comfortable way to continue smoking, and we've just given up.

It's really a shame, because I wouldn't mind smoking again, it's just that its not fun like it used to be.

WOW I have similar problem

I have had this problem for a while now. I'm not sure when it happened but I used to be able to rip a big toke from a bong all day but now I can barely hit a little pipe of good chronic without my throat closing. It's like it swells or something and I can't breath good at all. When I try to inhale fast I can hear a weesing sound. It seems like when this all started I also had starting having alot of sinus trouble 24/7 and sometimes difficulty swallowing. I can breath fine any other time but when I smoke. It is defiantly NOT a panic attack I know what that is and this is definitely not anything like that... Just swollen feeling throat and/or lungs. It really sucks and is taking the enjoyment out of smoking. This seems like this all started after I got pneumonia and quit smoking cigarette. I have smoke both cigarettes and weed for about 11 years with no problems up until about 9 months ago. I smoke everyday and pretty much have to use an inhaler to breath everytime I smoke... Any advise would be much appreciated for anybody! Thanks for reading!

Mate... hate to say it but it seems to happen to the best of us sooner or later...

It sounds like a panic attack. Unfortunately (at least for myself) that's how it goes... You smoke away without a care in the world, than in a few years of steady smoking that good ol' major panic attack gets ya and afterwards its as if you became hyper-sensitive to smoking, i.e. having major panic attacks every time you blaze, even from a toke or two...

I genuinely hope this isnt whats happenning to you and you have many blissfull sessions ahead of you, but unfortunately that'd been my personal experience.

This happened to me, I had to stop for years! It sucks... I just recently started up again!

Hello I have also been having this issue it seems like when I smoke weed I feel like something is not letting me breath and I also have trouble swallowing and it really scares me sometimes I feel like I need to go to the holpital and other times I have a regular high and everything is normal its really annoying how sometimes i can't enjoy my high.

When ever I have those feeling I try to calm my self down try to get something cold to drink and I talk with my friends about anything before I know it I'm not thinking I about it Nd I goes away. Word of advice just calm down and enjoy it try to do stuff that will get your mind of it and that usually helps try it, it might work for you . Happy smoking .
