Having fun without the use of drugs is possible for some people. But people who lead abstemious, sober lives seem to have the annoying propensity to think everyone else can be just like them and in fact should be for their own sake. The world seems to abound with this species of priggish and haughty people who revel in trying to proselytize others to espouse their teetolalism and life of continence. They're comparable to Bible thumpers in their zeal, tenacity, and repugnance. But saying this doesn't help the OP any, I suppose.
I've suffered with social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, OCD, a plethora of phobias, and panic disorder all my life. When I was an adolescent, I can recall having panic attacks nearly every morning before school, because the anticipatory social anxiety was of such an extreme intensity. To this day, I still cannot even comfortably sustain eye contact with my own family members, let alone strangers.
For me, a life of sobriety entails a life of frequent panic attacks, agoraphobia, social isolation, and unbearable malaise. I'd be as debilitated as Charles Darwin was, if not worse, without alcohol, benzos, barbiturates, and other depressants and sedative-hypnotics. If only Darwin knew of the salubrious and medicinal effects of these drugs. Had he did, I'm certain he'd concur.
