hi i have 14 cavities that all hurt horribly, so i have been getting prescribed vicodin, 2 days ago i went to my doctor to get more pills because my mouth had started to hurt all day long and all over my mouth instead of only at night and instead of vicodin he gave me codeine, he told me theres been new dea rules in the past month making it so he can't give me vicodin, i dont know if that is a lie or not, anyway the codeins been making me itchy and extremely drowsy, although it is helping my pain, i was wondering what the doctor would say if i asked to be switched back and told him my side effects, im afraid he will take my meds away thinking im just trying to get extra pills if i ask, someone please help, also if he agrees to give me vicodin, will he want the codeine back? because i like the effects of it, i just cant be drowsy and loopy all day long

In the US hydrocodone is now a CII, happened last year but he's not lying - entirely. Depends on his/her DEA license and it's limitations. Maybe he cannot prescribe CIIs, I never heard of morphine or oxy from a dentist, so maybe he / she is being straight up.

I don't know about the OP's specific situation, but Demerol (a CII substance) is commonly prescribed by dentists. I've heard of Percocet being prescribed as well.

Take a non-drowsy antihistamine like Cetirizine or Loratadine for the histamine reaction causing the itchiness.

How much are you taking.

It is doubtful he would ask for the codeine back (most likely), and hopefully he will help you. I would definitely speak to him first and see what happens, or question him about why he can't prescribe more, and in a worst case scenario go to the ER. The majority of people going to the ER and receiving pain killers are for mouth/tooth pain, since they can't fix it there.

Also, the reason you may be getting better pain relief from codeine is because it is metabolised into morphine, and you may be a high metaboliser--so you're getting more of an effect than people who are regular metabolisers. Good luck! Hope you can get something for your tooth pain!

I agree. However, a couple of times, the antihistamine made the opiate I was using a bit more strong.
Maybe it's just me but it happens sometimes..

Yes, that definitely does happen. They synergize to make the opiate stronger, cetrizine is used by some people to make the high stronger--it definitely can make you sleepier/noddier.

at the moment im taking 10 pills a day, which the bottle says i can do ( take 1 -2 tablets every 4-6 hours), but i noticed that the doctor only gave me enough to last me 9 days instead of 18, ( im getting the teeth taken out at april 1st) so second question, do you think hell prescribe me another 90 codeine pills if not 30 vicodin when i run out early which i know im going to

Yes, the law changed for hydrocodone. I was on it for a while (10mg/325mg, 4X a day) - I have rheumatoid arthritis. My doctor could no longer write prescriptions with refills and I had to go into the office to pick up the script once a month. I have since been switched to oxycodone (no acetaminophen) (10mg, 4X a day). We are going back and forth between MS Contin and Oxycontin because the Oxtcontin is really expensive without insurance, which I'm not using this year. The doctor is not lying. The law changed around the fall.

Hydrocodone is stronger than Codeine.

If codeine gets you more drowsy and helps your pain more, stick to it. If you get TOO drowsy, lower your dose, you can always take more, but not less.

He's not lying to you, because Vicodin/Hydrocodone is a schedule 2 drug now, not a schedule 3. Therefore, it's much more difficult to get RX'd hydrocodone now a days, just as difficult as any other schedule 2 narcotics, including oxycodone, morphine, dilaudid, etc.

You're taking too much. He gave you how much he thinks is necessary. If you show up asking for more he'll likely cut you off entirely (as you should, bc no Dr would want to enable a 14yo).

TL,DR: Stop trying to get drugs from your Doctor

This isn't appropriate for OD, we don't allow questions on what to tell your doc in order to get a drug prescribed.
