This question is purely out of curiosity, I dont have any medical conditions nor do I have a physical dependence on opiates.
Say you have a pretty big habit and for whatever reason you have to have surgery. How would one go about telling the doctors that what they're giving you does nothing at all for you and that in order for you to actually receive any analgesic effects, you require a much larger dose of whatever theyre giving you? Again, Im merely curious of what would be the best way to handle a situation like this and if anyone has any relevant past experiences theyd like to share.

There, you answered your own question.

Yep, kinda answered your own question there... I'd be honest about the situation or you could end up in a world of hurt. Don't expect any generous scripts though lol

If you are interested in learning about pain management there is a thread on it in the Other Drugs forum - link :)

Best bet is to always be honest with doctors. There are non-opioid painkillers too which can help - gabapentin/pregabalin for example..

This scenario is one of the driving forces behind me wanting to get clean off opiates (along with financial ruin and health concerns, of course). Just imagine that tomorrow I am in a serious car accident, need all sorts of surgery and even before that fact in the ambulance I'm semi-conscious but unable to speak due to the extraordinary pain. How would they know I need like, 16mg hydromorphone IVed just to TOUCH this pain? When a non-tolerant person needs what? 1-2mg, maybe 4mg MAX. And then afterwards, for pain management, it's straight to the fentanyl most likely. I'm more worried about immediate trauma based pain though, surgery and pain management can be 'planned' for. I know it's a pessimistic out-look, but eh, I am a pessimist so...
