does oxymetazoline have any cns stimulant properties? i've been using it for a while to clear my sinuses, and sometimes when i use it the stuff kinda makes me feel mildly "tweaky" and constricts my veins.

also, how does oxymetazoline work(is it a stimulant like propylhexedrine)? i've heard it has some stimulant effects like ephedrine but idk.

I think all you get from it - is pereferial stimulation due to adrenergic receptor activation. Higher pulse rate, higher BP, constricted veins. It looks like after a use of a stimulant you get used to link this feelings and cns stimulation.

god i love my oxymetazoline i been on and off it since i was a little kid ages6-19 now and i remember at school i would carry it around and tel lteachers i needed my oxy and would shoot a bit in my nose lol god i miss high school :( seriosuly tho its hella mentally addicting and physically when u run out and ur nose starts being so stuffy u would steal for more. hell i went up at 5 am before just to go to a gas station and buy a bottle :(

>7days use is all it takes to build tolerance, hence recommendation is to use no longer than such a period.

>7 days of use will also affect seriously your nose' musosa!!! Chronic inflammation, followed by irreversible damage if you don't pay attention to the first warning signals.

Take care!!!

I've been off it about 4 months after being addicted for most of my life. I still have severe nasal congestion most all the time. So fucking annoying god I want some nasal spray...

yeah i going to ask my doc about a nasal decongestant that won't cause rebound congestion. hopefully it won't be a vasoconstrictor.

i think its time you find help for your addiction...

find a methadone clinic, they'll help you get off the stuff. ;)

Cases have been reported of paranoid psychosis (pdf) resulting from use of oxymetazoline.

So it must have some central stimulant effects, though probably not pleasant... :|

i've had a few friend get kinda hooked on it actually. Strange thing to develop a habit with. Also, i'm pretty sure it can cause false positives on some drug tests for amphetamines.

I know I'm responding to a three year old post, but since this is bumped already...

Some people just can't get enough of the weak adrenergic decongestants. There have been cases of people developing SERIOUS addictions to pseudoephedrine. The case I remember involved a judge injecting increasing doses of pseudo until she totally went off the rocker.

A tip for if you get addicted to this spray and want/need to get off it:

When your nose is stuffy like at night and its preventing you from sleeping (bugging the hell out of you, making you keep spraying), just spray it in ONE nostril! (pick left or right, and stick to just spraying that one and never the other) Just do one nostril and let the opposite go back to normal over several days. Once that nostril goes to normal you will be able to stop completely because at night you'll be able to breath through the one that finally went back to normal. I had to do this once..

Eww. I don't think this one is worth trying, folks. Oxymetazoline is also used in eye drops to "get the red out," in addition to the more common tetrahydrazoline (which I assume is very similar as oxy is derived from it). You've probably heard of the myth that you can give somebody the runs by spiking their drink with standard Visine eye drops (that's tetrahydrazoline), but the light-hearted hijinks that have historically ensued from these pranks are more along the lines of rectal bleeding, seizures, comas, and being arrested for attempted murder (classic!).
Just do one nostril and let the opposite go back to normal over several days.
I've done the same!

I've gone the William S. Borroughs route and diluted it with a saline-only nose spray. Also, only 1 spray instead of 2 when you're cutting back. I can't believe they can sell this stuff over the counter. It's one of the few OTC drugs where you can notice a real difference in under a minute.
