Hello,

My cousin per say is taking 80 to 120 mg of OP's a day. He has been doing so for about 6 weeks. Before that they had not taken any pain medicine whatsoever.

He wants to know how to responsibly get off of the medicine. I am not experienced to advise him how to do so. He is worried that if he does it cold turkey he will get sick.

Is this true ? Can he do it cold turkey or should he try to taper off the medicine ? Also, he does not get the medicine from his doctor but from the streets so he cannot call his doctor

and get a lighter prescription.

I am hoping some more experienced people from this forum can answer this question. I am so glad this forum his here.

Thank you in advance !

Hi, welcome to bluelight. It's almost certain that using at that level is going to cause a physical dependance leading to withdrawal symptoms upon detox. However it has been a relatively short period of use and this is the first detox which are both reasons to expect less intense withdrawal. Make no mistake though this is likely to hurt.

The best thing to do would be to set a taper schedule (either short or long depending on personal preferences) and then stick to that and come down to a lower dose before detoxing. However, not many people who are abusing opiates are capable of doing that without medical supervision and end up just continuing to abuse them. Its definitely worth a try at first though.

The other option is to go cold turkey, but that's likely to be fairly painful. You can use non-opiate comfort meds to take the edge off such as benzos, anti-histamines, weed, alcohol etc. A lot of these come with their own risk of addiction so you must be careful with your comfort meds otherwise you'll just end up adding another habit on top. There's a lot you can do to minimise withdrawals and make this process much easier though

If neither of those work then it's time to get serious and look for professional help.

Man, is giggle hating on BL... even adding BL before or after yield ~0 results... :sus:

Heres a thread dealing with overcoming opioid WDs in probably the greatest detail.
