Hey guys. I’ve been on OxyContin 40 mg bid plus 5 7.5mg Percocet daily for years now. I’m a disabled veteran, can’t work anymore. I’m so freaking tired of taking these pills. They allow me to walk and function somewhat. Each month now it’s taking me 3-5 days to get my Phamacy just to refill the Oxy. It’s always out of stock etc. In 10 years I’ve only had severe withdrawal around 4 times. Over 60 years old it’s just too hard to go through.
Any suggestions on a different medication to take its place? Suggestion on a weaning schedule? My life revolves around dates to my refill and my days are spent watching the clock so I don’t take what I need and run out by the months end. My son died from alcohol last year so now I sit here all day alone with my pups, smoking cigarettes and sipping whiskey. I was addicted to cocaine thirty years ago and managed to get off it by myself. I know most people here have it tougher than I do, Thanks for anyone’s advice. I know there must be tons of posts and history on the site, but it’s hard for my old ass to read the small print. God bless you guys.

Apparently the new miracle drug to come off opioids is "SR-17018"; though it seems to be hard to get currently and I can't vouch for it personally as I've never used it.

If you're looking to taper or quit, helpful drugs that will ease your symptoms are dissociatives (things like ketamine, deschloroketamine etc). I know people also use downers often but I find they are too addictive for most people and considering you already drink alcohol I wouldn't recommend GABA drugs.

Another option is going the more "healthy" route; consider that longterm use causes hypothyroidism and hypoganodism. You're thyroid and hormone levels are probably out of whack, which is a big factor in why you feel so bad now.

Testosterone shots would probably make withdrawal a lot easier, but T is "addictive" by itself, so then you might be stuck on that for the rest of your life; although I think at 60 it's a thing to consider if your doctor is willing.
I'd look into supplementing thyroid (T3 or N.D.T; Natural Desiccated Thyroid) or if you're going for a cold turkey withdrawal, high doses of Progesterone. Look into what Ray Peat has said about this.

I wish you the best of luck and would certainly come back to explain certain things in detail, my question to you is; what do you want to do? Are you looking to get completely clean off opioids or are you looking to feel better while continuening the use or scaling down?

Kind Regards

A few years ago I kicked a 100mg/day oxycodone habit with red vein kratom leaf. I prefer the capsules, but powder works faster if you can stand the taste & grittiness.

I had almost no withdrawal symptoms whatsoever.& didn't miss a day of work. Kratom itself is also habit-forming but much easier to wean off of than pharmaceutical opioids.

AVOID 7-OH or any similar kratom "extracts" or concentrates! They are bad news!

Best wishes 💜

67 yrs old here, been taking oxyC for years , 10 mg 3x aday along with .5 3x a day Clonazepam. I live in the rural mountains of CO and use a Walmart pharmacy which is closest drive, it's about 45 minutes one way. They've never been out of them and have a 3 day window opening as long as my doc calls it in. Actually, she does it thru email/ internet. I e. If my last script was filled on the 20th, I could get it refilled on the 16th. I usually try and get my doc to do that as I often keep stash for leftovers. Not all walmarts do that window thing, some do 1 or 2 days early, some none.,You'd have to call and ask the pharmacies. Do you want to stay on them but pissed because you always get jacked around on your refills due to our of stock crap, and end up with withdrawal issues? Why not call different pharms near you and tell them your situation and frustration with your past experiences getting your oxy filled. I find the bigger cities seem to run short and smaller towns are much better. Find a reliable place and stay with them. Sometimes it's an old mom and pop shop, so don't rule them out. I feel pretty fortunate with my situation and get my scripts always filled with no hassles. In earlier years Id fck up and took more than scripted and had to go thru withdrawals for 2 to 3 days and it sucked. A few times I had to go to streets ( so to speak) and pay 10 bucks for one 10mg oxy. Id buy ten to hold me over instead of going thru WDs. Btw, what I got was from a friend and was prescription oxy. I' d never mess with street stuff. Shit, I shoulda looked where you live. I'm in the USA, it may be different other places. Try Walmarts in outskirt towns depending where you live. It may be worth it to do like I do and drive 45 minutes to an hour knowing they always have my scripts in stock and filled and ready.

...high doses of Progesterone. Look into what Ray Peat has said about this.
Excellent suggestion btw. The use of Progesterone and Pregnenolone is highly underrated for facilitating the tapering process and reducing withdrawals. The pro-GABA effect or Progesterone is just one of it's beneficial effects, and Pregnenolone also has multiple relevant benefits. The body converts both of these into Testosterone which avoids having to buy it. Both Progesterone and Pregnenolone are available OTC in most countries.

This article gives some context for what these two substances actually do and why they're so relevant.

Other OTC options include agmatine and theanine. I've written a lot on here about these and their relevance for facilitating tapering and reducing withdrawals, do a search for those terms and you'll find the posts.

Did they do surgery for you or just give you pills because they don't want to spend the money to fix you?
