Hey Y’all so I have a 70lb German Shepard who is in pain and hurting. I’ve got some Roxy 15’s here and I’m wondering what would happen if I gave him 1/4 of one. Does anyone know ANYTHING about this? Some drug buddy help here please? I know one of yall has given your dog a pain pill to see what it does!! Talk to me about it would yen’s??

I read all of that and saw nowhere where it says specifically not to give your dog oxycodone. I’m not saying he should, but the only meds it mentioned by name not to give are ibuprofen, Tylenol and naproxen.
True, that link doesn't say anything about oxycodone not being used for dogs, it's just not listed as a common one.

Animals are often given the same opioids as humans, just in different dosages depending on your pets weight.

So while I think oxycodone would work in a dog, for legal & ethical reasons, I won't recommend anyone try it.

Oxycodone can be used in dogs, but just take the dog to the vet. Depending on type of pain, oxycodone might not be of much benefit, and only for a very short period of time. 5mg shouldn't kill a 70 pound dog, but just because it won't kill the dog doesn't mean you should give it to the dogs. All kinds of complications could occur and it would need monitoring, empty stomach etc. If its joint pain, hip pain im guessing since its shepard, the dog would be better served with an anti-inflammatory drug like meloxicam.

Definitely don't give your dog ibuprofen or other human drugs. Ibuprofen has very small therapeutic window in dogs and sensitive to poisoning.

Oxycodone is sometimes used in canine cancer but it is uncommon.

Yeah the 3 mentioned in the page posted above(Tylenol, ibuprofen, naproxen) are all said to cause stomach bleeding and possibly other serious issues.

On the oxy though, I wasn’t going to say it as to not promote it, while it should be safe to give a 70lb German Shepherd 2.5mg or even 5mg of oxy it’s pretty unnecessary. I walked out of the vet years ago when my dog was getting really bad with his hip dysplasia with one of those blister packs of oxycodone like they used to give at the hospital before having fun became illegal. The vet said not to give him more than a half “every few hours”. Saved one for him and I ate the rest on the drive home lol. They’d also given me 30 tramadol and 30 gabapentin for him as well. Wish that vet was still around

Have you dosed your dog with oxycodone before, you say?

Instead of splitting the pill, crush it and make a solution for volumetric dosing..

But in any case I vote for consulting a vet. At least you could call a vet and explain you still have the oxy-dog-tablets maybe?

If your dog is in pain because of hip dysplasia, you might want to consider euthanasia.. I realise that isn't an advice you want, but I feel the need to mention because it's a chronic condition that only get worse as time goes.

I had a Great Dane that had to be euthanized because of hip dysplasia as well..

Sending love and good vibes to you and your best friend <3

Meloxicam is regularly used for dogs(and humans), but shouldn't be used for more than 5 days(I think). It's a NSAID..

And cats. Meloxicam is the most common painkiller prescribed after castration/sterilisation of cats. Sometimes they give tramadol. And I hear pregabalin is also used. If the owner of cat a looks suspicious, then they probably consider whether to prescribe meds that have abuse potential.

Check online. However when I was younger the families German Shepard had a hip dysplasia operation. The drugs they gave him didn't seem to help.

Human NSAIDS, are bad for dogs.( which are in many opiods)

No, don't it was on the list of what not to give. However, it maybe due to the versions of the drug with acetaminophen or paracetamol or Tylenol. Different names for same NSAID drug.

Figure out if it has Tylenol in it. If it doesn't, ask a veterinarian.

I would hold onto those oxy's, every year there are more people. Every year the FDA or DEA or some other agency, further limits opiod drug production( in America).

Roxycodone does not have Tylenol in it

I didn't know, because I take oxycodone but it doesn't have Tylenol in it( bad liver).

Not sure what the difference BTW roxy's and oxy's without Tylenol is?
It’s just a brand name as far as I know. I haven’t seen a real Roxy in years, not that they don’t exist anymore, they just stopped prescribing oxy without Tylenol in it to almost everybody around here. And the ones that do get them aren’t too keen on sharing anymore

I have cirrhosis of the liver, so I can't have acetaminophen, and there are few options. Thanks for the info, because nurses would say Roxycodone or something similar and I am like what?
Anyways thanks for the answer.

for a hospice dog with terminal cancer i took care of i got tramadol.
she never needed it, though (i took it instead)

Yeah, that is one of the meds safe for dogs. I don't know if there is a version with NSAID's in them.

Anyways that's horrible, that poor dog was just trying to be strong, while you got buzzed. Just kidding.

I would have given the dog a few and said I think he/she needs something stronger, to a veterinarian. Lol
