ive been addicted to oxycontin for about 3 or 4 months now...i love it. but anyway i was just wondering if anyone else agrees that its a total anti-depressant as well as an opiate. i will be extremely upset about something, almost in tears...I'll do like 40 mg of oxy (yeah i have an extreme tolerence now) and be totally great again, like magic.

I consider oxycodone an overall Panacea (cure all). I agree with you that it is definitely effective when curing depression. Please don't flame me for this, but I did three 80s on 9/11. It helped me deal with the tragedy. Before I aquired those beautiful blue tablets, I could barely control my tears. Being male, I felt that I had to hold it in. Stupid double-standard I know. The OC helped me deal with it. I went from being hysterical, to being calm, collected, while still feeling empathy for the victims. I still worried about my girlfriend and cousin, but could rid myself of the anxiety associated with not knowing whether or not your loved ones were alright.
On a side note... i think the 'mental addiction' associted with opiates is brought on when the user takes it as an escape route for the pains o consciousness. I'm physically dependent, but I'd like to think of myself as not being addicted (sadly, I think I'm heading down the wrong path). But I'm trying to moderate myself.. but it's so damn hard when it's easily available.
If you use it for pure 'enhancement', you won't get into the misery of addiction... I was good about this, but I tended to enhance every single day. The feeling was wonderful, but now I need over 100mg to catch a nice buzz (with Robo).. 200 all at once to nod. This is in no way dick sizing. I'm ashamed of my tolerance. When I took the patch with Acid Kat, I was slightly buzzed (this pertains to an above post). But when I did only 20mgs, I was very nice.
In my conclusion, prescribing opiates would defintely cure depression. The key is to find a way to avoid building a tolerance. In my experience, it's been hard to moderate myself as well. But if I paid a standard price, this probably wouldn't have been the case.
I'm sure PhreeX and Tripdoc will have some extremely valuable input here. I'm looking forward to reading their replies. I think I recall PhreeX mentioning that he wrote up a proposition to use opiates for depression. I'd love to read that. Post it if you can...
Fuck PLUR get high!

Of course it's the magic cure-all! I have been using this anti-depressant for about 4 years now.. I find that it's nothing but benifits! There are really too many issues to debate on this... some can argue that "you will become addicited" - but with any "conventional" anti-d you're just as "hooked" in the sens that if you stop taking the meds you will fall into such a horrible depression many are driven to suicidie or at least feeling worse then worse for a few weeks ... I could go on an on, but yeah, oxycodone is definitly a "cure all" drug...

i also think that opiates in general are great relievers of DEPRESION and SADNESS...they really put one in a great mood, and they relieve PAIN very effectively...
i love OC's, and have been taking them for about 8 months now, everyday..i only take around 10 mgs every 3 hours, unless its the weekend, then i will take around 40 mgs to get a solid buzz..i do NOT mix it with anything, as i dont need to..many people have commented on how much more MELLOW and LAID BACK than i am now as compared to how i used to be..bottom line, i love opiates, and i do agree with person above who said it is literally IMPOSSIBLE to stay away from opiates when they are so easily accessible and easily afforded..im in the same boat you are in, and i love it..i havent met anyone actually who can take OC's or HEROIN a few days of the week..i really dont think its possible, especially when they have alot of money and can get the drug rather easily..
i do have ONE problem with opiates and that is it does decrease the SEX DRIVE!!i have found that i can still get it up, but the overall desire is just not there for the most part, UNLESS i have taken some EPHEDRINE to get me going..opiates fill up the pleasure center in thy brain, thus making it very unnecessary to do anything else, like EAT, SLEEP, HAVE SEX etc etc..once u have taken an opiate, nothing else is needed to make ya happy..great ehh??

Opiates and other downers (benzos, alcohol, etc) are only antidepressants in the sense that they help the user escape from/temporarily forget his problems. It's a case of "drowning one's sorrows" as is said about alcohol.
However, opiates are not TRUE antidepressants (at least not for the vast majority of people) becuase they do not get at the source of the problem. Opiates provide oblivion to the SYMPTOMS of depression, but they do not cure the cause of the depression, nor do they help the user improve his life in a constructive manner.
Though I sometimes doubt whether real antidepressants (such as the SSRIs) are affecting the causes of depression (sometimes therapy is better for this), I do think that they help the user improve his life and become more productive. And this is the crucial difference between antidepressants and opiates.

Opiates are great for temporary relief of depression (and many other problems). As fairnymph said though it's only a cover up. The only real way to get out of a clinical depression state is anti-depression medication and therapy. I have taken a few semesters of psyc. and its be proven many time. Thats way withdrawl off of the anti-D's can cause heavy depression.

Our society lacks "true" anti-depressants.
In fact, with the brain being complex as it is, I doubt the possible existence of any such drug. Our psychiatric medications ALL treat symptoms, not causes. Furthermore, the bias against opiates in the psychiatric community is probably more of a hinderance than a a boon. It has blocked off many research opportunities which could possibly help many for which SSRI's are not effective.

oxycodone is a wonder drug. I have never had a problem lately that an OC couldn't fix. What the bad side is , is the fact that I can't function normally without it. For example now , OC's are scare and its hard for me to cop , and I feel awful. I wish I could synthesize oxycodone.

Agreeing with fairnymph, it's pretty clear opioids just provide symptomatic relief -- you were depressed, they get you really high, so of course you're happy! When the high wears off, you're just as depressed as before... maybe worse cause you wanna be high again. (I know the feeling) :)
Now maybe this would be fine, if you could just stay high all the time and that would work. However that's impossible for the vast majority of people, the way things are now.
Antidepressants at least strike closer to the source, not just masking the depression with euphoric mood lift. Now whether they "fix" the problem I don't know -- sometimes they seem to, as they can be discontinued without remission. Many people though must remain on them or relapse.
Another point is that using opioids for depression is a fucking open door for all sorts of other problems, namely addiction. This is a point I want to belabor:
Psychological drug addiction is an objective, factual condition. It's not just a case of weak will, or similar to liking women, or shopping, etc. It's a particular, definite biological process! There is a distinct "reward button" in our brains, located around something called the nucleus accumbens. With most things we like -- sex, money, food, etc -- our brain does filtering, so they don't press this button too much. After you've had say a lot of sex, it doesn't press this button so much: it might still feel great, but your "craving" for sex doesn't increase. (except in nymphomaniacs). You can use brainscans and see directly that normal activities quickly lose their ability to press this reward button.
Addictive drugs though pretty much bypass the brain's filtering mechanism. They hit the reward button directly, in a way the brain was never prepared for. One of the main things the reward button does is inciting learning -- making sure you learn the right behaviors to get those rewards! With drugs that keep pushing the button, people overlearn, and it turns into an obsession with the drug and things associated with it. I'm sure most of you have noticed the weird obsession with drug rituals and paraphernalia that addicted people tend to have.
Now I like drugs too, but I think it's important to understand that addiction isn't just a little thing of losing willpower etc. It's this particular biological process. Now sure, those with "stronger wills" can resist addiction longer, and individual psychology plays a big role. But it's also somewhat random. For example, some people have genes that make alcohol press the reward button stronger than others; and these people are much more likely to become alcoholics than normal, even if they have a strong will.
This has wandered somewhat offtopic... my apologies. :)

Having been through all the various anti-d's I find opioids to bethe most effective - is addiction and physical dependance an issue? Yeah, only if you don't have a steady supply .. if you're able to maintain the intake, then I can only think of positive reasons for this therapy..

I'm not so sure about the anti-depressant thing. They're obviously a ploy for pharmaceutical companies to make mad dough, but there's also another factor that i recently learned about. While reading one of my psych texts, it mentioned something to the notion of SSRIs promoting the growth of a certain type of new brain cell... this almost directly coorelates with CANCER... they said that this doesn't 'neccesarily' mean that prozac will cause cancer, but they're still finding out all sorts of new stuff about these drugs.. I found that to be very interesting
opiates.. well, I have a love/hate relationship with them.. right now it's hate because i'm withdrawing really bad and m room mate took my stash because he wants me to kick.
BUT... i'm doing this because i want to lower my tolerance.. i have no plan on quitting permantently. IMO opiates could be the answer to a utopia... if we could all teach ourselves restaint, or the supply was affordable.
I smoke cigarettes, and this costs me about $4/day. I'm sure that if opiates were readily available as a recreational psychoactive substance, they' be as affordable. And for all the idiots who go overboard with a USP grade substance, well... that's Darwanism. I know I could live a life using oxycodone daily and be totally productive. And the sex-drive thing... make love in the morning, before you take your dose. Worked for me

Im confused, your wondering if your ADDICTION is an anti depressant? NO!!! your happy because you have your drug and you didnt have it three seconds ago when you were sad. why were you sad? You didnt have your DRUG!. Thats what ADDICTION is...
DUR !!

It should be mentioned that in most cases of severe or long-term depression, the patient usually has to take antidepressants for the rest of his life. So they don't "get at the problem" really any more than opiates do.

what exactly is the reason why so many people are depressed??is it because of all the stress in life and they just cant handle it, or are they chemically "imbalanced" in terms of they dont produce enuff SERATONIN on there own??i know more than a few people who openly admit to taking anti-DEP's, yet they seem kinda strange in a way...they seem "off" while they are under influence of there ANTI-D's..
i would much rather take OPIATES for the rest of my lifethan take PROZAC..then again, im not depressed..i would like to hear input on some really bummed out people who have taken anti-d' for most of there life, stop and start taking some form of opiates, then comment on which they think is better..
as for the sex drive thingy, i need my "fix" before i think about sex...shit, im usually so fucking drained right when i wake up SEX isnt even on my mind..i USED to wake up with a nice stiffy every morning, even on BAIN, but since ive been hitting the OC's, its no longer around :(

Drugs in general are a way out of escaping reality. This doesn't exactly pertain to opiates but.....last year I was raped by my so called friend. When I got back to my dorm room I started to get really upset about the whole issue. Instead of telling someone I did a fat line of crystal and smoked a pack of cigarettes. Once i snorted that line I didn't care and convinced myself that it was my fault. he had given me a lot of K, while staying completely sober, and when he asked me to have sex I said no at first. Then when I became more and more fucked up I just laid there on his bed and it happened. After that night I lost it for a while and was high for so long to cover up the pain tthat I felt inside. When you're high it's easy to forget. But that high has to end sometime, and them reality will hit harder than ever.

Am I the only one that isn't experiencing this magic depression cure? My mood is certainly improved while I'm on opiates but if I have something serious going on in my life I don't all of a sudden forget my problems. They might be a bit easier to deal with, but they sure as hell don't seem to go away. I couldn't run over a kid and forget about it by coming home and bumping an oxy. Is it just me?

Oxycodone is modern day GERETOL that actually works. SSRIS just keep you from jumping off a cliff , but don't give you that *extra* motivation . My only main concern is overdose , because once I have a supply , I don't stop till its gone. That is the area I need improvement in.
Anyone who doesn't see the dynamic properties of it have yet to experience a true oxy buzz, or took too much thier first time.

I totally agree with u Diffidence...
Oxycontin does not make my probems disapear, in fact they are still usually on my mind while I am on the drug.....oxy just makes the problem a bit easier to deal with....it calms me, relaxes me...and i think rationally (as opposed to my regular irrationals). Oxycontin keeps me on a neutral, but nice, steady running line of life.

you guys are talking about how oxy is "so easy to get"? from a dealer, by your own script or what? i've never heard of anyone around here having it.
