Owsley Stanley RIP

i didnt realize so many people were on such a personal level with "bear" stanley lol 8)

yup. i just rolled my eyes at this thread.

Hmm, I rolled half of an eye ;) I mean, I'm not happy that he died in the way he did, but to say I feel sad would be a complete lie.

Its just a pity that another connection with the glory days of psychedelia has passed on, but that doesn't mean we can't keep on truckin'.

Ultimately though, the death of a stranger doesn't really touch me. Sounds kinda mean spirited, but if I mourned every death in the world, I would never actually live....:\

R.I.P. Bear. Without you I wouldn't be the person I am today.

Bit much maybe, but if you did know him personally, or ate his acid, my condolences.

<3

eat a dick, lucid.

i was a pen pal of stanley's and was up for another round of orders for belt buckles/accessories for a small group of friends/family that were interested in having a set to gift them. Unfortunately, it looks like those of us that have them are the ones that are left with the honor.

Bear was a needley old porcupine but had feelings as real and profound as anyone's. A conversation we had in regards to his wife leaving for the states when her mother died was a real treasure to me, because it shared some pretty fantastic insights from some one i respect in regards to the nature of love. Although the dude had a big name and he knew it, his contributions to the world are plentiful and he played a good part in some of what happened in the united states in regards to LSD.

So next time you're sucking on a bunk hoffman blotter sold to you as ALD-52 and you're staring up at the stars wondering what it's all about, give thanks to some one with gall enough to stand for something in the face of a world gone mad. He gave away a lot of what he made. He gave it away.

And if you're curious, his madcap rants and raves in regard to diet are pretty interesting too.

Bear was awesome, if nutty. If you're in america and you've taken LSD, i don't think it'd be too much to give the man a moment of silence.

Please quit it, everyone here. Don't fight in a condoleance thread over who has the right to commemorate the guy and who doesn't. If you think you don't owe this man any respect than keep out of it and leave everyone in peace who wants to express it.

I am not choosing sides, just live and let live - also die and let die.

All non-sense beyond this point will be removed.

If I had known that someone was starting a forum here I wouldn't have initiated one in Drug Culture but I am heartened because I had thought most BLers hadn't even noticed his passing. Truly a hero of mine.

I think it is pretty sad that some here seem oblivious to how iconic the man really was. Without even having to play "6 Degrees of Seperation" it is profoundly easy to recognise he WAS the 60s, and the 60s gave birth to a consciousness that spawned today's MDMA Culture, ergo Bluelight exists indirectly (but with a straight descendance from) because of Owsley.

Think of the 1960s and try to name an important Counter Cultural influence. Grateful Dead? Owsley was their financial backer until 1970. Their iconic "Steal Your Face" logo (the red and blue skull with the lightning bolt) was co-designed by him. More over he invented the first PA System created especially for music. He is the man who founded Myer Sound Labs and Alembic. Ergo you will be hard pressed to name a single American band of that era who didn't benefit directly from the man's electronic accumen.

Hells Angels? It was because of Owsley that the club entered into the Counter Culture, becoming the darling of such disparate personalities as Allen Ginsberg, Norman Mailer and the Rolling Stones. Of course Hunter Thompson wouldn't have looked sideways at the Hells Angels if Owsley hadn't entered into a distribution agreement with the Oakland Chapter. Indeed it is worth noting that it was the Oakland Chapter that became the afore mentioned media darling.

Dr.Timothy Leary? After Leary began leeching off of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love he was only using Owsley's product. The 2 spent much time together at the Brotherhood's Ranch where Owsley eventually relocated his manufacturing operation.

It was the Brotherhood's profits largely driven by Owsley's product (hashish isn't nearly as profitable) that funded Leary's prison escape. That money was initially given to the Black Panthers who sub-contracted the prison break to the Weathermen.

What about his product? Blue Cheer? Orange Sunshine? Purple Haze (he called it Monterey Purple and hated anyone calling his product "Hazy")?

It was his product that transformed the Beatles. The band was on par with today's Boy Bands before dosing. They veered into "Sgt Pepper" and in turn led most of pop culture as well. John Lennon actually contracted with Owsley to personally provide him with product for the indefinite future. How can one even calculate the effect Owsley had on Lennon and to an equal extent the Beatles?

On and on and on, Owsley was in the centre of it all.
