what would cause heart/respiratory failure due to stimulants such as cocaine? please be technical

You basically answered your own question. In high doses, cocaine can depress the vital centers of the brain (the hindbrain\brain stem area) which would result in respiratory failure. Cocaine prevents the synaptic reuptake of adrenalin and dopamine (which is broken down into adrenalin). When adrenalin levels get too high, the CNS becomes overactive. Overactivity can result in seizures, cardiac arrythmia, cardiac arrest, and myocardial infarction (heart attack). Because it is a local anaesthetic (the -caine group), systemic absorption can lower the seizure threshold, and can affect the heart rythymn (because LA's prevent pain locally by blocking nerve impulses).
So basically the answer is that cocaine causes respiratory/heart problems that come from cocaine use (Hey, it makes at least as much sense as your question).
