There are some people who complain that weed makes them over analyze things and some people even quit because of that.

Well I have that problem big time. However It wasn't like that when I first started smoking. Back then I was physically and mentally healthy and did not smoke very often. When i did, it was pure stoner fun. Those were the honey moon days.

After about a year with more frequent use (weekends, multiple times a week) and after a traumatic [stupid] event I noticed that at least for part of my high, I felt intense paranoia and i analyzed so many 'faults' in my personality and other aspects of my life. It almost crippled my ability to relax and enjoy my high like i used to. Because of that I decreased my smoking and even stopped for months at a time.

Part of me thinks this common effect:

a) Just exposes mental issues by bringing them to the surface.

b) Another part thinks the weed is actually causing the anxiety.

I am not one who likes to hide from my problems so I really want to know which on it is so I can deal with it the right way. I am leaning towards a.

What do you guys think? Do any of you have this effect from weed?

It sounds like the issue might be your state-of-mind going into it.. Even if you don't have any crippling self-confidence issues when your sober, smoking could be bringing minor insecurities to the forefront.

My advice if you want to keep trying to smoke would be to take a break for a little while, and then when you do smoke, go into it slowly and in a good, relaxed state of mind. Pot can indeed induce anxiety and as a result, I often times see people who have one anxious experience, then worry about it the next time they smoke, and in-turn cause themselves another one. Anxiety loves to self-perpetuate itself just from your own (often subconscious) negative thoughts, but there are ways to break that cycle.

Good luck brother

in all seriousness though - is there a history/tendency towards psychosis, schizophrenia, neurosis, obsessive compulsive, anxiety etc in your family?
if so or even if not it could be the thc's nature of directly affecting dopamine balance (exactly where schizophrenia etc shows up) and over prolonged usage and/or genetic predisposition it can bring to the surface or aggravate afirementioned conditions.
dj speaks from experience (though not extensive scientific study)

Well my family on my mom's side has a history of anxiety and depression. but some of them don't.

I'm not one for self diagnosis, but this description of schizophrenia is eerily similar to what I am experiencing.

aye.
sure some of them don't. though you say family on your mum's side. that's more than one eh? and it is hereditary.
remember though it aint a weakness.
i quit weed after 7 years of everyday usage for this very reason.
since then i get more done, enjoy my life, am not paranoid, am married and happy with a career in the music business.
knock it on the head mate is my suggestion, and read up on dopamine and its importance in connection with well-being.
would it be so bad if you left the stoners on the sofas and got on with your life?

"it's only weed" thinking can often be used to bellittle - but for me it is the one substance that sends me round the twist - slowly surely and completely.

seriously give me any class a over that dreaded weed - (though i can, now, enjoy a mild high coupled with alchohol or benzos - takes the anxious edge off)

Yeah I feel you on that. thanks for the reply

i think that this is one of the beauties of pot smoking. it makes you think about everything and really opening your mind. addressing your weakness or insecurities is good for everyone. i love weed because it makes me reflect on me and the people around me.

aye each to their own boarder ;)

i think opening yourself to new perceptions and mindstates is enjoyable and anyone should be free to do so at their own discretion.
however this is a harm reduction site. in the interests of harm reduction, i would say that persisting with a substance when it is causing distress or perhaps mental illness or anxiety should be strongly discouraged or seriously monitored.
there is a big difference between a new light on things and schizophrenia though eh?

enjoy.
