I'm interested in just the decontextual scenes (monologues, climactic, introductory, etc.) that stand out in your mind. You needn't explain why.

Here's my submission- the case made by Q2 (Star Trek: Voyager) for why he wanted to die:

Apocalypse Now - Brando's speech to Sheen

Some reputable directors have bemoaned Brando's performance in that film. He showed up on set without having read Conrad's book or even the script, if I recall correctly. Did the fact that he was Brando make up for this lack of preparation? I doubt it.

To me what matters in that scene is the dialogue and the delivery. It's poignant and fits with the tone of the film perfectly. Even if it was the improvisation of a fat bald drunk man who wasn't Brando it would still be a great scene. I'm not a fan of Brando but I really enjoy Apocalypse Now.

Other scenes of note:

Douglas's "Greed is good" speech in Wall Street

Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis' asylum scene in 12 Monkeys.

I have an inkling that you're totally on the mark. I'll watch it again, and get back to you.

The execution scene in Dancer in the Dark -all song and dance ceases, the body falls and swings, another exploited, innocent person dies. An incredibly powerful ending to an intense film.

That, and when Ash says "Give me some sugar baby!" in Army of Darkness.
:)

Once Were Warriors- When Jake's wife leaves him, and it becomes clear that his massive strength only covers a scared and insecure man.

Scarface- Opening interogation scene. Pacino in the zone absolutely.

Refresh my memory. Please quote the reason.

My favourite Voyager moment is the opening shot (pre title sequence) of the episode which introduces Species 8472 which the quick annihilation of the borg ships.

I agree. I've only seen the last half of that film so I didn't get the full picture. But that execution scene made me gasp and left me shocked. Brilliantly done.

A few scenes that spring to my mind are:

The scene in A Streetcar Named Desire where Stanley has the big fight with Stella and she runs upstairs to the neighbours house. All the way through the film you wonder what the hell she's doing with this arsehole, then as you see him standing at the bottom of the stairs and calling her name it finally all makes sense. This big brute of a man is litterally reduced to a helpless little boy and you see the innocence in him that she does. And she goes running back into his arms. Fucking powerfull scene.

The scene in The Basketball Diaries where Leonardo DiCaprio is pleading with his mother to give him some money (much like the Streetcar scene in some ways). It brings a lump to my throat every time.

The scene in Cape Fear where Max (Robert De Niro) meets Danielle (Juliette Lewis) at the school theatre and pretends to be her new drama teacher. The part where he puts his thumb in her mouth is really unnerving and makes me squirm in my seat.

Tribal girl, I was sooo thinking of that Basketball Diaries scene... my others are:

From Dust Till Dawn - Opening scene (Robbery of roadhouse)
Most captivating scene Tarantino has done to date for me... gets me sucked into the whole movie everytime, plus every actor is awesome, even Tarantino himself.

Lord Of War - Interrigation of Nicholase Cage's Character scene
Simply because I feel it is one of the most important messages to come out of a movie in quite some time.

Clerks 2 - Randal's 'Lord of the Rings' Sketch
It's just that funny =D

2001: A Space Odyssey
The scene in which HAL is slowly "dying". The monotonous pleas for help and forgiveness hit me right in the chest every time I hear it. There's also something poignant about HAL regressing to childhood and being stripped of his newfound consciousness. I suppose Bowman's laboured breathing against the silence of the spacecraft just adds to that intensity.

Actually I think tarantino's best written scene is in true romance: "Sicileans were spawned by Niggers" Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper

Totally. I also love the scene when Santanico Pandemonium comes out for the first time. Everything about it is beautiful and erotic.

My answers will be old hat.

--The fight scene(s) between Gandalf and the Balrog in "The Two Towers".

--The climactic fight scene inside the Death Star in "Return of the Jedi".

--The scene between Proximo and Maximus in "Gladiator" where Proximo is talking about the Colosseum.

--The final flight scene in "The Right Stuff". Takes my breath away *every* time.

--The death ride in "El Cid".

--Marv in front of the statue of Cardinal Roark in "Sin City".

--The train ride in "Spirited Away".

--The final scene of "Blade Runner".

--The "hotel room" scene in "2001: A Space Odyssey".

Christ, I better stop before this goes on all night... ;)

Yeah I hope that's what Belisarius' talking about too... best death ever.

The grand canyon in Thelma and Louise, when that sinister black helicopter suddenly appears from below and it cuts to a long shot of several black police cars in hot pursuit of the mustang. *wow*

Cheech's pussy speech in From Dusk Till Dawn

"If you can find cheaper pussy, fuck it!"
