Some stats for context:

As of today there have been 41 deaths and 1,370 cases, which gives a fatality ratio of about 3%.

There were 8,000 cases of SARS over 9 months, and this new one has only been known for about a month.

China Virus Death Toll Rises To 56, Total Cases Near 2,000
The death toll from a virus in China has risen to 56 and the number of people infected across the country is nearing 2,000, authorities said Sunday.

Fifteen more people have died and at least 688 new cases of the coronavirus have now been confirmed, according to the National Health Commission.

Among the new deaths, 13 were in Hubei, the province at the heart of the outbreak, while Shanghai reported its first death.

At least 52 people have now died in total in Hubei, two in central Henan province, one in Heilongjiang in the northeast and one in Hebei in the north.

Hubei's health authorities separately reported 323 new confirmed cases of the virus, which first emerged in the provincial capital, Wuhan, in late December.

Chinese authorities have so far reported 1,975 cases nationwide.

President Xi Jinping warned Saturday that China faced a "grave situation" as authorities raced to contain a respiratory illness that has caused the widespread abandonment of Lunar New Year celebrations nationwide and overwhelmed health facilities in Hubei.

The contagion remained centred on the Hubei provincial capital of Wuhan, which accounted for seven of the new deaths and 46 of the new confirmed cases, said the Hubei Health Commission.

Wuhan and more than a dozen other cities in the province have been locked down in a rapidly expanding quarantine effort marked by transport shutdowns and other restrictions on movement.

The previously unknown virus has caused global concern because of its similarity to the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) pathogen, which killed hundreds across mainland China and Hong Kong in 2002-2003.

It also has struck at possibly the worst time for China, when hundreds of millions of people are travelling across the country or overseas to celebrate the Lunar New Year holiday, China's most important festival.

Hundreds of military doctors have been sent to Hubei and authorities are rushing to build a pair of field hospitals to deal with the crisis as patients swamp local medical facilities.

The virus has spread nationwide in China and cases have been reported in several other countries as far away as the United States, France and Australia.

@Hylight : Think its mainly the public health issue, as its pneumonic and also the danger to those immunocompromised ( which is valid).

@Asclepius I don't trust hedgehogs either, look at this one I caught chomping on a sick bird that dropped dead out of the tree. That thing is harboring some serious diseases.

It's curious that Hubei province, the epicentre, has only 51% of the cases but 95% of the deaths. Is this just a delay since the people there most likely caught the disease first, or something else?

Where are the rest of the cases? My first suspicion would be a difference in health care in the relevant regions.

The part I don't get. And I've tried repeatedly to get an answer from googling.. Is why exactly this warrants such alarm.

Is it all just bullshit? I mean sure, we don't want extra people dying if it can be prevented. And sure, a serious 1918 style pandemic is certainly alarming...

But so far this seems similar to SARS yeah? And I pose my question of SARS too.

The number of people killed by these diseases is a fraction of the number killed every year by regular influenza. Nobody says shit about the people who die from the regular flu.

But one that's even slightly more aggressive is big news? Why?

I certainly get the global medical community paying close attention. But the media and community response seems like bs to me.
 
Gee...it would be a dumb idea to crack down on illegal selling of wildlife at markets since this is an interspecies virus.

Good place to start though,.
 
Another confirmed case in Toronto. It has a 20 day incubation so we will see more. Our government won't ban flights though

Well, the history and ubiquity of some flu does lead to underestimation of deadliness, especially in some younger people. The severity of the flu really does need to be emphasized more. Along with other ubiquitous causes of death.

Relative novelty and media hype does contribute of course.

We have attempts for vaccines for the flu, and some minor disease modifiers (neuraminidase inhibitors, that cap snatching interference drug baloxavir, others). Not the same for the coronavirus so far.

Biologically there are a few differences. While both are single stranded RNA viruses, influenza is more of a (-) sense RNA virus (BMore V) with a different cap strategy and some unique elements, while the coronaviruses are (+) sense RNA (BMore IV) and differ in other cellular mechanisms. I think the (+)ssRNA can directly replicate in the cytoplasm while the flu goes through some cycle in the nucleus with different targets. So possible treatments may not be the same.

Not a virology person though (Baltimore class even used?).

Still hype and novelty of new diseases, as well as stories (the markets/animals), always produce news.


EDIT: SARS coronavirus was also nasty for affecting broadly upper and lower respiratory tracts, as such getting the syndrome.

also its not spreading too fast right now. only 5 here in the U.S. right now.

I decided this week is perfect for beefing up my pantry, with this going round and rising exponentially is China. Yes, I prep for this, I find it a good investment to seize the moment now and buy a bunch of food I will end up eating anyway and throw down 15 bucks on a box of surgical masks and nitrile gloves and a bottle of fresh bleach to boot.

Guys, a corona virus in essence is a common cold variety, and this has the ease of infection of the common cold combined with some serious lethality. Infected 4474, cured 64, died 107, that does NOT look good. In Hubei province there are -today- as many confirmed cases as there were in the whole world -yesterday-. Exponential growth. This is an exceptionally lethal, pneumonia inducing common cold, with all that implies.
