People with type A blood more likely to catch coronavirus and die from it

by Mike Stunson | Medical Xpress | 19 Mar 2020

People with type A blood are more likely to catch coronavirus and die from it, according to a new study published in Wuhan, China.

Those with type O blood may be less likely to get COVID-19, which has infected more than 200,000 people worldwide, according to a Johns Hopkins University map that tracks confirmed cases.

"If you are type A, there is no need to panic. It does not mean you will be infected 100 percent," researcher Gao Yingdai told the South China Morning Post. "If you are type O, it does not mean you are absolutely safe, either. You still need to wash your hands and follow the guidelines issued by authorities."

Researchers compared more than 2,100 confirmed coronavirus cases in China against more than 3,600 healthy Wuhan residents. While 31% of Wuhan residents have type A blood, more than 37% of surveyed patients had the blood type.

Around 40% of United States residents have type A blood, according to the San Diego Blood Bank. More than 45% have Type O blood, the website shows.

The same Chinese study showed 25% of surveyed cases had type O blood, despite more than 33% of the population having that type of blood.

The study examined 206 people in Wuhan who died from the virus and there were 63% more type A fatal cases than type O.

"People with blood group A might need particularly strengthened personal protection to reduce the chance of infection," researchers said in their study.

The study did not provide an explanation for why type A patients have a higher risk for coronavirus.

The American Red Cross said it is facing "a severe blood shortage due to an unprecedented number of blood drive cancellations." The Red Cross has implemented extra safety precautions at blood drive centers.

o negative? if so you should give blood - you're the universal donor.

(i'm o negative)

alasdair

Nah, just boring old super common O+

And even if I were O-, I'm life time banned by having ever had Hep C.

I suspect a majority of bluelighters are probably banned from donating blood. The rules vary by location. For the longest time having ever injected drugs was a permanent deferment in Australia too. But at some point it changed to a 5 year deferment.

I wanna say having ever exchanged sex for drugs or money also used to be a permanent deferral. But that also seems to have recently changed.

At its peak, before the rules changed, I think I've met about 4 lifetime deferment criteria at the same time.

Yeah, in Canada you are permanently ineligible to give blood if you have ever used intravenous street drugs or if you've taken money or drugs for sex since 1977. Men who have had sex with men were permanently ineligible for a long time, but the government's been shortening the ineligibility period over the past decade and as of 2019 it's only three months.

really? i feel like that's something you - not you specifically, but one - should know. it could save your life.
I don't know this either, but you make a good point. How do you find out your blood type? I just went and found some old blood test results and it doesn't say a blood type anywhere.

Blood tests won't show your blood type unless blood type is specifically what was requested to be tested.

You could go to your doctor and ask him to have your blood type tested.

Oh God Molyneux... I haven't been subjected to him in a long time.

I just wanna emphasize that Dr Paul Cottrell is a doctor of Finance. :p

Cottrell seemed very knowledgeable. I don't know much of anything about the bio-molecular uh - stuff, how viruses work, mutate, everything involved, but he at least seemed to. I also am not a big fan of Molyneux - though it makes me feel bad to say it. I find him useful/valuable, but videos much too long to watch daily, and seems to have a flair for the dramatic (trained in theater, he did).

...I am A+. So's my dad. I'm around him a lot, so I guess I have to be extra careful.

Thanks.

Damn it, now I am getting ads for Canadian Blood Services. I guess they missed the part where I was talking about ineligibility to donate blood...

I am so fed up with hearing the crap that comes out of Donalds mouth.

Ive never been part of the group that call him racist however I just saw a tweet then which changed my mind. Calling the Coronavirus 'The China Virus' is not funny and damn right childish.

I love that he was blaming China for not sounding the alarm earlier and giving countries more time to prepare.

When just a couple weeks ago when he could have been preparing he was still telling everyone it was nothing.
