Hey everybody,

Been searching online for this answer or a recently documented example to no avail. I understand that Missouri is the only state that does not have a Prescription Monitoring Program in place and I'll be traveling there for Thanksgiving to see the boyfriend's side for the thanksgiving holiday. I was wondering if anyone had success or any issues with filling a legal prescription for 30 day supply of Adderall (or any Schedule II drug, I suppose for that matter) from an out of state doctor? I have never attempted at refilling the script out of state before due to the horror stories I've read online about how strictly the PMP programs are enforced so I just was curious if this idea is at all plausible or if it's more trouble then it's worth? Tired of synching up my travel schedule to obtain my refills within ridiculous pharmacy/doctor time frames.

Thanks!

You should easily be able to show your travel plans/documents to your own doctor for such a short holiday and have him/her adjust the prescription.

The PMP may or may not play any role in this. An individual state's PMP shows controlled drugs that have been filled in that state, so if you never visited and filled a prescription there but have in your home state, the doctor or pharmacist would not see your info. However, increasingly states are sharing data with bordering states and sometimes even states they do not share a border with. But this is a moot point because Missouri can see nothing.

As far as filling an out of state prescription, there is no federal regulation forbidding it, but the DEA does say it is a possible red flag and the pharmacist is obligated to investigate the details. At the very least, expect the pharmacy to ask you a few questions and to phone your doctor. Being that it is a holiday, the pharmacist may be a little more forgiving, but if you can get it filled before you leave, I would recommend doing so. I know that if you have insurance this may be difficult, but you may want to call your plan and see if they allow for a vacation override or at the very least, be proactive and have your doctor call the out of state pharmacy explaining the situation and authorizing them to fill it.
