Out of control on magic mushrooms

I would love to lead by example and write a letter to this paper's editor that could be published. The problem with that is, if it were published, simply through the information in these two posts it would be easy to find out my actual identity by reading the paper's online edition. I don't expect anyone to post about the fact that they've contacted any publication with a non-anonymous letter to the editor, just that they do it if they feel they have a rational evidence-based argument that applies to the content of an article. They could post that they've emailed a journalist or editor without the intent of having their communications published however, because there is no risk in having their name published if they only do that.

I like your idea, however I highly doubt we could influence any new sources. You have to remember that if a newspaper looks pro-drug in any way, they're going to lose a ton of readers.

Fact is, newspapers don't want to tell people what they don't want to hear, and believe me, people don't want to hear anything which doesn't crucify drug users.

^That may be true to an extent. But by contacting the journalists and editors who write the stories and decide how they are presented we influence the conscience and knowledge of those journalists and editors. That can change a future story's presentation from blatently anti-drug to neutral. By writing letters to the editor and posting responsibly and rationally in a newspaper's own forums/story discussions we influence the opinions of participants in those discussions, participants who very likely have never been exposed to our perspectives and arguments, or at least, and most importantly, that actual people rather than talking heads support such positions (thereby acting on their social perceptions).

it wouldnt really matter whether we wrote to them or not, we would only be looked upon as dirty drug users who are misinformed and are trying to lead our children down the wrong path, damn hippies. the general public is stupid.

^Watching trains, having any sort of mental illness, having aids, being left handed, all used to have huge stigmas attached to them.

stigmas generally tend to never change.
Yeah, this is a silly statement. How about interracial and homosexual marriages? A lot more people support them now than used to. And this is the age of the internet, things tend to move faster these days. I understand pessimism, but maintained pessimism in the face of so much strong historical evidence to the contrary isn't a defensible philosophy, it's an excuse for laziness.

Look at the response of Mr. de Graaf above. He wrote an article about mushrooms that was skewered by posters for it's ignorance and alarmist tone. You'd imagine he was certainly one of the people that believes drug users are the scum of the earth. Yet, after reading posts from a number of people giving good reasons why what he said was a problem, he encouraged us to write into his newspaper and expose the contradictions he had published when he could've simply ignored my email to him much more easily. He even says he is personally skeptical about some of the propagandized claims about mushrooms, but that he doesn't want to put personal opinion in the story, as though he intended his article to fall in line with what he perceives to be the attitudes of the region he writes for. By writing in you help to change perceived social attitudes.

alright alright so it was a bad statement, but in my opinion drug users will always be hated or detested because sadly there is a vast number of people who do not use drugs, and they tend to be the ones making decisions, and the number on reason they despise us is because they can look down upon us and say "hey, my life can suck, but at least i'm a better person/better off then the junkies down the road". the number one reason we will most likely always be looked down upon is because it makes the vast population feel better about themselves. maybe one day we will have a good chance to prove them all wrong, as we know they are, but i'm a pessimist and that seems very far fetched. i can never see the use of IV with no stigma, or diesel to be found to have any actual medical value, or see meth ever being excepted enough to be made safely and pharmaceuticaly so its not cut with shit. the general public is too ignorant to see past the DARE propaganda. maybe i'm being ignorant in your eyes but i just cant see it happening. then again, history shows that drug use was not always looked down upon and maybe in the future it can repeat its self.

anyone gone skydiving on shrooms or lsd before? now that would be a blast.

Thats actually on my list of things to do before i die :D . That would be so awesome but so scary at the same time. I once thought that taking a big hit of salvia would be a good idea for skidiving but then i realized you have to actually know how to pull open the parachute :\ . LSD would be the best for that because i find LSD to be much less confusing then mushrooms.

It wasent too long ago that you could buy morphine, heroin, cocaine and other drugs right over the damn counter in the US and canada. Well history wise it was not that long ago. Back then drunks where looked down upon while it was perfectly acceptable for old grandpa to shoot morphine all he wanted to. Or for your mom to have some cocaine to get her going in the morning because sure as fuck noone but her did the house work.

So yes attitudes do change despite what people think. Hell if you had told me even 5 years ago that the president of the US would be black id have told you that you where fucking nuts altogether. Also even as late as the 90's there was a huge stigma around gay people but now not so much. Sure there are still bigoted ignorant twats around and there are alot of them but people do change.

What the article doesn't mention is how the 5 other friends he ate the mushrooms with all wandered off into the woods and had a fucking blast just tripping balls and wandering around enjoying themselves...

thats why i put that last statement in. even though i'm pessimistic about how people think, there is one thing you can deff count on, and thats that history will repeat its self. its just that people tend to think what they want even if they are presented facts disproving them.
