Our View: Drug testing law could be good for the state
If it passes, it’s hard not to support the drug testing of those who have a history of drug use and seek out assistance from public funds.
By all accounts, it seems to be a popular bill with a vast number of people in Alabama.
That said, we urge the state to be careful.
Drug testing is not a cheap business to get into, and if it reaches the point where we are spending exponentially more to test those on welfare than we are saving by denying benefits to those on drugs, then we hope the state would re-evaluate the measure.
To be clear, the success of this bill does not depend on the amount of money it saves or the amount of money it may cost, but those factors need to be taken into consideration.
Putting the financial aspect aside, we support the message it sends. Drugs like meth continue to wreck families, endanger lives and place a burden on the people of Alabama.
This law could provide one more deterrent and maybe give someone the push they need to turn their life around.
