Hi, I'm new so please forgive my ignorence. I recently got some pills from an online pharmacy, they were supposed to be vicodin but I'm not so sure they are.

I know most questions here deal with x testing but I was wondering if theres a home test that can tell me what this pill is? If not is there anywhere you can take or send them to be tested?

Thanks for your help!

vicodine = hydrocodone

From Clarkes Analysis of drugs and poisons:

Colour Test: Marquis Test—yellow→brown→violet

Ok thanks for that, I don't really know how these tests work but I guess your saying I can tell its hydro if it turns yellow brown or violet? I'm sorry, I'm an old fogie, when I was doing all my shit X wasn't even around so this is all new to me. I'll have to do a bit more research on it.

So what if a pill was a combination of things? Like if it has some hyrdo but it has something else too? Anyway to actually like disect a pill and tell everything thats in it?

The reaction should go yellow then brown then violet.

Without knowing what you're looking for, reagent testing can be a bit limited for such an application. Most reagents, when used without TLC or similar, are only good for indicating the possible presence of a suspected compound or range of compounds.

That being said, there are several reagents that will detect various opiates and opiate like drugs. But, without a range of cross references (meaning several reagents) and perhaps a colorimeter to compare various reaction colors, it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish between closely structured substances.

Marquis, Mecke, Froehde and Mandelin are probably the best "all round" reagents to use when detecting "narcotics". However, combinations of drugs could prove more difficult to resolve.

Check out ; Appendix 19.2. Colour reactions of narcotics in "Clarke's Analysis of Dugs and Poisons" ( available via free online trial here)

Boy, drugs are a lot more complicated now then when I was young :)

I guess the main thing is I liked them and they didn't kill me, i don't know if I'll bother with the time & expense of testing them.

Thanks for all your help, stay safe!
