Is there a manual polarimeter that if an optically active material is placed in the machine the initial condition when the machine is set to zero is to see a bright defined strip running down the center (top to bottom) with two semicicular fields on each side that are highly contrasting (almost no brightness/dim) and to obtain the optical rotation one dials in until the definition of the "shadows" on both sides of the strip become congruent in intensity to the strip itself so as to lose any definition of difference between what was the two semicircular sides of the strip and the strip itself to more or less form a circular field of near even brightness....????
