And one more step towards marijuana reform! woohoo!

SALEM, Ore. - The State of Oregon has re-classified how it views marijuana.

The State Board of Pharmacy voted Wednesday to recognize pot as a drug that has medical use.

The move came because of a law passed last year that ordered marijuana to be removed from a list of drugs that have "high abuse potential and no acceptable medical use."

Marijuana will now be what is known as a "Schedule II controlled substance." That's a drug that has medical use but still has "high abuse potential."

Oregon becomes the first state in the nation to make marijuana anything less serious than a Schedule I drug.

I didn't think that states were allowed to schedule drugs. Pursuant to the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970, the DEA makes a determination as to what will or will not be added to or removed from the federally established schedules.

This does not match my understanding either. I thought states had their own, scheduling system which can use numbers, letters or any other system, and which may or may not parallel the federal scheduling. Isn't this why salvia is illegal in some states but not others? So maybe "Schedule II" in Oregon is independent from federal schedule II.

Also, the article seems to imply that every state but Oregon has marijana as a schedule 1 drug and does not recognize any medicinal use for it, but that does not sound right either, particularly since medical marijuana is legal in California.

I'm no expert, so maybe I'm wrong, but this article does not sound right to me.

I suppose under each state's jurisdiction though, scheduling could end up varying. But yes, it's a step.

rescheduling is different than authorization for mmj. you explain the discrepancies yourself, not sure why it still feels "wrong" to you.

Great news. Just the fact that states on the east are legalizing medical Mj is great news.

Ohio is putting it on the ballot again this year.

I hope it passes then i can finally use my Insurance YAY

Cocaine and meth are also schedule II....

That doesn't mean you won't be thrown in prison for a very long time if your caught with it....

oregon has had medicinal cannabis licensing for years . with the pharmacists on board perhaps it will be less of a hassle to get my card every year .
