OraQuick HIV test

Saw something like this at rightaid.
Almost bought it, it would just be nice to say you know, ya know?

^ LOL

it would probably be a good idea if everyone did this before sleeping with each other. it's so easy. just like Plan B, it's overpriced.

I think it's a good idea before going condomless with someone. I've taken Plan B twice now just as a precaution and holy shit I felt so nauseous. lol

I have and I would again.

I got mine through the county health department for free. I also have yearly blood work because I don't think the evidence that the saliva tests are as effective as blood tests is in. I believe the rate of false negatives is around 8% - I would rather know definitively either way so that I could start treatment in the unlikely event that I were to test positive. My last test was a blood test in August, and it was negative. I have had one partner since then who also tested negative.

Lysis, I have taken Plan B twice. It made me really sick both times. I got a non-hormonal IUD after that; once was a miss, twice was a fuckup.

Something my virology professor explained to us was that you want an RT-PCR to test for things like HIV, because you're actually amplifying and identifying the actual virus (RNA in this case). Regular tests are just looking for the antibodies, which the immune system has a delayed response for HIV, as most people know. The problem is that RT-PCR is much more expensive.

No. Be Forever Alone and Be AIDS FREE.

I love you,
You love me,
Elmo gave me HIV...

Then I gave it to Magic Johnson and then he gave it to a bunch of people.

True story.

You can get ELISA test results back in a very short time- like two days. (and it'd probably be cheaper)

Even in a hospital, PCR testing is rarely used unless testing for recent infection or testing organs for donation. In other words, I have never seen it done. In hospitals, we usually use Western Blot Assay.

And why not do a test? It'd be great to know that you and your partner are HIV free.

^^ Thanks for that. That is the difference between a book nerd and someone who actually is in the field. :D My virology professor was a bit out there, but what PhD isn't?
