Ive been using every day for the past year and a half. In retrospect, starting heroin was the single worst choice in my life. Things have fallen apart so fast due to the drug. I now can barely support the ever growing habit. In order to get started in a local methadone clinic it is going to cost about 155 dollars for the first visit. I cant save that much. Besides being a dope fiend I do stay on top of all my bills, pay my car, cable, video games, pets..etc... so I dont have the means to set that 155 aside. So what I have done is set up an appointment with a general care doctor for the 18 of this month.

*How do I get the doctor to look at me more than just a dope fiend.

* How honest should I be with him, for example, should I tell him I break the law every single day multiple times to support my habit

* Should I ask him for methadone? I know a dr has to have a special license to prescribe for maintance , but I have heard of doctors doing it w/o the that special liscence.

*Should I ask for a weaker opiate

* I tried suboxone before, it didnt work for me. I broke free from my H addiction, but life got tough and I ran back to H

* I am also manic depressive, what should I treat first?

any advice or answers you guys can help me with will be used.. thanks ahead of time

edit-to be honest, i cant quit opiates, they are my safe place to go when things get tough. They have stained my brain, they are here to stay with me forever. I love them with all my soul. I dont want to quit, but I notice how heroin has sucked the soul out of my body. I want to feel like I did a year and a half ago, but at the same time i still want to feel all warm, I believe methadone is my best bet.. i just cant afford the start up cost

I really think you should look into giving suboxone another try. Going on methadone maintenance is like giving yourself a one way ticket to opiate prison, as your tolerance will shoot through the roof and you will be tied to the methadone clinic like an anvil, unable to travel freely or live life in any sort of a spontaneous way.

What was the dose of suboxone you were on before? It may be that if you were inducing yourself that you were not taking enough. Make an appointment with a suboxone-licensed doctor, as going to a GP is going to get you nowhere fast.

idr, and I think i was maybe taking too much of the suboxone, i felt dizzy and confused the whole time. I like opiates, and i cant quit, or even if i could I dont think i want to. opiates are now a scar on my soul. The way I see it, methadone is the lesser of the evil. It will save me about 1500/month that I usually spend on drugs, its clean(er) compared to street drugs, and the supply is unlimited. blahh i dont know.....i wish i never found heroin...or opiates of any kind

I don't think methadone is going to give you the effects you are looking for. After the first month or 2 methadone just makes you feel normal, all it does is prevent withdrawal symptoms. That's why so many people keep using heroin or other opioids on top of their methadone. And I wouldn't say the supply is unlimited! You are basically at the mercy of the clinic/doctor/pharmacy, the government/laws, being able to get to the clinic or pharmacy, etc. Your doctor/clinic can cut you off or not prescribe you enough, your pharmacy (if that's where you get it) can run out of methadone or make a mistake or say they need to speak to your dr before giving you your next dose, you could get sick or your car could break down and you could miss your dr's appt or miss picking up your methadone on time, you could lose your dr and be unable to find a new one, you could have to go out of town and have them refuse to give you carries - all these things have happened to me and it is terrible when it does. Methadone creates a far worse dependence than heroin with much longer lasting withdrawal symptoms. Stopping methadone cold turkey can kill you, stopping heroin can't. I do think methadone can be a very helpful tool for some when used right, and it has helped me (although I do regret going on it and especially staying on it for so long), but I think it's very important to learn everything possible about it before even considering going on MMT.

I really think you should tell your doctor about your drug problem (I don't see a huge need to explain what you're doing to get money for drugs unless you think it will help your case), how long you have been using, how much you normally use, your mental health issues, and ask him to tell you the details about all the potential options available to you. Some GPs may not know too much about all the different options, so you might ask to be referred to an addiction specialist, a counsellor, or an outreach organization. It's really important to work on your mental addiction, the reasons you are using in the first place (depression, anxiety, etc) and any other mental health issues you may have (such as the bipolar) at the same time, and not just your physical dependence to opioids. You can tell your doctor that you have not been able to quit cold turkey and that you don't think you are ready for detox as you think you will just relapse. I would not ask for specific drugs, especially short-acting opioids, just explain your situation and say that you really need some help and let your doctor suggest the options or possible medications.

dude I'm sorry did you just list CABLE and VIDEOGAMES as reasons as to why you don't have the means to save that much money? priorities man, priorities. I think you can go without cable and video games for a bit to get into a clinic.

I was an H user for 16years and i tried everything to remove it, and/or replace it in my life. Methadone clinic 4 times, suboxone for a year and cold-turkey for months at a time. pills, H, and ANYTHING MADE BY THE HANDS OF 'MAN' will forever be harmful and not work. Even just quitting doesn't work- it literally has a less than 10% success. Wanna know what works? Saved my life, got me super-healthy? Poppy-Pods. Maybe its 'cuz i started with H or what iv'e been through being traumatic and what-not. But i went straight from mass(couldn't ever get enough) to a cup of tea in the morning, and a cup of tea at night. I'M HEALTHY AND NOT BROKE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 16 YEARS, I HAVE MY OWN HUMBLE LEGAL WORK, AND I'M IN SCHOOL, and i don't go chasing stuff ever anymore. Or worry about getting busted, 'cuz its legal for these pod companies TO SELL THESE AS LONG AS THERE NOT KNOWINGLY SELLING THEM TO PEOPLE THAT ARE BREAKING THE LAW WITH THEM. I know where not suppose to say stuff about who what where and why, so give it a try if you dont know what else to do. there all natural, most people grow them Organically cuz they really don't need much, and if you put a nice green or white tea in the mix, then your being good for your body- as apposed to the preveas way of life.

I am not certain why you've made an appointment with a GP that cannot prescribe either methadone or Suboxone. Do you expect a GP to treat you for your addiction? Addiction treatment is beyond the scope of a general practitioner's practice. More than likely, you will be referred to drug and alcohol treatment (which is a good thing).

With all due respect, I find it dubious when heroin addicts say they cannot afford treatment yet they spend above and beyond the equivalent on heroin.

Agreed.
