they would get some methanol, preferably hplc grade or at least reagent grade, since anhydrous is preferred and technical grade can have impurities but will work if its only grade that one can aquire, hell maybe even good old denatured from local hardware would probably work, but they have never tried using it and wouldn't suggest it. also, some acetone will help and is often used but is not necessary as they have discovered. now they take as much as possible, the more one has the bigger they will grow obviously, and dissolve a portion of said molecule in a vial/jar/beaker in as little amount of methanol as possible. best to add drop wise to the material already in the beaker. slightly heating the solution, with lid on container can help speed up dissolution but PLEASE NEVER USE FLAME!!!!! if you don't have a hot plate, can use a hair dryer, but please not long as the hair dryer can also spark. if using heat, make sure to swirl as superheated spots will quickly occur and KABLOOSHHHH!!! out the top it'll easily volcano leading to crying and cursing at them for talking one into this shit!! ok, once its dissolved, set it somewhere at room temp, with lid off, allowing it to slowly evaporate. forgot to mention, a taller skinnier container is better than shallow bigger round one, since it'll tend to sink and one wants accumulating goodies to not spread out. what you are looking for is the most uniform looking jewel or the one that catches your eye! this is why better grade methanol is preferred since they have seen usually molecule will form in one or two spots initially making this easier. the slower the alcohol evaporates, the better looking the shard. it doesn't matter how big the piece is, as this is a seed crystal used to grow the big daddy!! but the more uniform the seed the more uniform the final. it naturally forms the coolest shape!! forming various truncated and half truncated oblique Rhombohedrons and/or tetrahedrons! the more thats dissolved when forming the main crystal and the longer one leaves it to grow, the more shapes it'll grow.
now one repeats the previous steps, using as much molecule as possible, making sure of course to have a nice seed crystal! its important to only put as much methanol, dropwise, as it takes to dissolve the whole lot. when one reaches that point, slowly heat up solution, while swirling/stirring of course!!, until crystals start "falling" out of solution. sometimes this will occur on the surface of liquid at the edges/sides of beaker/vial. when this happens, add drop wise at room temp this time, enough methanol till nothing falls out of solution, then add approx. 10-20 drops more to give extra "headroom". now one drops the seed crystal in the mix and sets aside to watch the magic happen! found it best around 60 degrees fahrenheit to grow the monster daddys!!! the more stable the temp, the more uniform the result.. experiment and see what happens, but one could grow some nice sugar crystals if they like making candy this way!!!
