Opium - a few more questions

I have been reading earlier posts on this subject but I still have a few questions.
I am currently in south asia and managed to buy something that was said to be Opium. Since I have not seen Opium before I am not sure it is the real stuff.
The stuff I got is black and soft and about the size of a quarter coin.
If I hold it between my fingers it is sticky and leaves brown stains.
According to other posts it should smell like flowers. I would describe the smell
of what I have got as something like coffe beans with a tint of licorice. The taste
is very bitter.
I tried to smoke it yesterday with the foil/straw method (since I lack a proper pipe).
I started of, as recommended, with a matchhead size bit. When I held it above the flame it started to melt and bubble almost immidiately and then it gave away only a small amount of smoke. I am not very good at above mentioned method so I m not sure I managed to inhale very much of it. It had a taste though but not very strong. Kind of sweetish.
Anyway, I did not get high from it . I thought I felt something to start with but it was most problaby placebo. I have to mention that I was very excited about trying out this classic drug.
I did a second try with the same amount but again not sure I inhaled enought of the smoke.
The stuff left on the foil had the same look and shape as a burnt out match head. A black, crumbly chunk.
I would be very grateful if anyone with experience could add some comments mainly on my description of the smell, taste or the amount of smoke produced.
Also if you think it is worth another try or is it an obvious rip off?
 
this could be unrefined opium. In asia you tend to get 2 types. Eating and smoking opium the latter tends to be more smooth and has a reddish tinge to it. It has a bitter taste and smells earthy. This sounds like eating opium. I would plug it, rather than eat it as you can get dysentry from eating it. Try about 1/4 gram to half a gram. I dont know how big a quarter is as i aint from the US.
In india you get about a tola (10.5 grams) for about 7 US.
Be very carefull when buying any drugs in Asia, there are so many scams and many involve informing on you to the local police to get you to part with your money.

I did not know that you could get two types of opium.
I am not from the US either but I have approx. 3-4 grams and I paid 10 US for it (I am not in India but I think it is coming from there).
I am not so sure of the plugging part though. Wont you still get all dodgy bacterias in your system if you plug it?
So, is it no point at all trying to moke "eating" opium?
Yes, I am aware of the scam risk but thanks anyway.

I´ll try to smoke a larger amount next time and if that does not work I´ll consider the tea option.
 
What I did when I arrived was to meet some people that had been there for awhile. We got most of ours from the mountain tribes.
