Well, I just saw my family doc yesterday. And I've had enough of this crazy cycle of Opiate and Benzo addiction. Especially the Opiates, after 7 years of heavy heavy opiate abuse. Too many times detoxing, this time I'm going to do it for sure, and I'm doing a home detox.

So my doc loaded me up with some Librium (Chlordiazepoxide) - 25mg QID (four times a day).
and OXY-IR 5mg for 2-3 days, then straight off and then just using Librium, Lyrica, Metoprolol, and Zopiclone for sleep.

Anyways, whats your guys opinions on Librium? I know its kind of a weak benzo, but it has active metabolites of temazepam, diazepam, and oxazepam which is good.

BTW - I'm coming off high dose of intranasal Hydromorphone, and boy are those withdrawals fucking nasty.

Anyways, what do you guys think? I don't really notice any difference in taking Clonazepam 1mg twice a day, and Librium 25mg 4x/day. I actually find the Librium a little better. According to benzo.org.uk equivalence chart. 25mg of Librium = 10mg Diazepam.

Wish me luck! This will be about my 4th time detoxing from opiates. Suboxone isn't an option as there is a fucking 4 month waiting list (I've also been on Suboxone in the past but its just another bandaid, and nowhere near being 'clean'. And as of Methadone, fuck that as I've been there, done that and Methadone just shot my tolerance through the roof and is even harder to come off. I finally need to start getting on with my life so I'm hoping I can finally kick this shit for good.

Librium isnt bad for DTs I have had to take them for alcohol on a few occasions. It helped to smooth things out. Thats my experience.

I'm dislike Librium. I was using it prior to what I'm using now (Triazolam) and I just wasn't a fan. It doesn't hit me the same way that Triazolam and other benzos do.

PS. Good luck! :)

edit: Sorry, that was fairly useless feedback. Librium DID effectively reduce anxiety for me, but it wasn't as recreational IMO (I much prefer short acting benzos - they seem to pack more of a punch for me). I definitely noticed a fair amount of muscle relaxation with Librium and I'd wager that it is good option for someone in your particular situation.

Librium is a very mild benzodiazepine. It is a good drug for alcohol or benzo withdrawal. It's basically a very mild version of Valium, similar to oxazepam but even milder.

Librium sure isn't my cup of tea. Its quite weak and the only way I get something out of it is by taking doses around 200-250mg or more. I know equivalence charts state 25mg = 10mg Diazepam but I'd say more like 50mg is compared to 10mg Diazepam. I would take clonazepam over Librium any day. The effects are very subtle and it almost doesn't feel like a benzodiazepine.

Hmm. Yeah I wish he would have scripted me Diazepam. Although Librium's active metabolites are quite long and consist of diazepam, temazepam, and oxazepam. He said Librium would be a better choice. BTW - I am I doing a crash taper to get off opiates first. I only have 20mg of Oxycodone left from my Crash taper. So, then I'll I have then is Pregabalin, Librium, and Metoprolol, and Zopiclone for sleep.

BTW this is 7 years of heavy opiate abuse, with about this 4th detox now. Hydromorphone w/ds are very very nasty after intranasal use for awhile. (Worse than Oxycodone w/ds IMO). Also 7 years of heavy benzo abuse as well. Used to have a 600mg Oxycodone habit per day. (Not dicksizing sorry).

Yeah but diazepam's active metabolites are also temazepam & oxazepam (along with desmethyldiazepam). In fact its active metabolites half-life is the same (36-200 hours) without the active metabolite it has a much longer half-life (max 30 hours vs. max 100 hours).

The properties of Diazepam are much more powerful than Librium's. Produces more sedation, better anti-convulsant, better muscle relaxant & IMO its a better anxiolytic.

My Suboxone doctor also offered me Librium for my benzo withdrawals but I declined and went with the diazepam my psychiatrist gave me. Never used Librium for detox but I will tell you, from 11 years of benzodiazepine use, it was painless and the only withdrawals were mental. I was very surprised. I did a VERY slow taper, lowered a dose (5mg) every 2-4 weeks.

The most prominent of diazepam's metabolites is desmethyldiazepam (Nordazepam) - this is what causes the prolonged effect of diazepam. Temazepam (oxydiazepam) and oxazepam are quickly metabolized through conjugation.

These metabolites (temazepam, oxazepam) are conjugated with glucuronide, and are excreted primarily in the urine. Because of these active metabolites, the serum values of diazepam alone are not useful in predicting the effects of the drug.

Yeah, like I said, nordazepam is the main metabolite and the metabolite which is responsible for diazepam's prolonged effect. It's the main active metabolite of several benzos.

It is a weak benzo, as many other posters have mentioned, but still has its use (assuming dosing is correct - sorry to hear about what happened to you P J, that's scary stuff :() for detox. Long-acting benzos are ideal for this purpose, although I doubt you'll get very much of a recreational effect/"high" from it.

Librium is part of the "protocol" for those detoxing off opiates - Librium and clonidine.

My Canadian friends tell me that in Canada, the "protocol drugs" are diazepam (Valium), clonidine, and 800 mg ibuprofen. I think this is a far better set of drugs to tackle opiate withdrawal than what we are provided with here in the United States. Most people in detox are often in withdrawal from very powerful opiates like morphine/heroin, hydromorphone, etc.

Librium and clonidine? What a total joke!

Yeah, I was actually surprised when my Sub doctor actually offered me Librium and not Diazepam for my benzo withdrawals. He told me that the Valium taper isn't so much used these days but rather Librium. I thought he was just lying and didn't want to give me Valium because of the stigma it carries. Luckily my psychiatrist listened to me and switched me onto Valium, not Librium.

I know this is post is a bit old. I suffer from sever anxiety/depression cycles and I tend to abuse my oxycodone during this period. I am lucky I get to go to my local detox program at the hospital during these periods for rest and relaxation and counseling. In addition to the 4 mgs daily of subutex I get (This is all I need to get by as my opiate abuse isnt extreme) I was given librium for the first time ever.

Now I have been on most every benzo and sleep aid over 15 years for my anxiety ( only in cycles, I never take anything on a daily basis). I have to say that Librium is the first drug that completely wiped away my anxiety and I slept like a bear in hibernation. NOTHING has ever come even close to the relief I had from that librium and as I said I am not a benzo newbie. My issue is that it is TOO sedating so it is something that I would take if my anxiety got unbearable again and I did not have anything planned the next day. I took my dose at 10pm and I was still stumbling around at 3pm the next day!
