I'm sorry if in wrong place but I tried to put in other drugs and I couldn't see a box for a prefix so wouldn't let me post. If someone could move it if it's in wrong place :)
Hi I've been through these forums for a while but never posted.
Basically SWIM has been taking oxycontin on and off for around a year mostly at weekends but their marriage fell apart 6 months ago unrelated to this problem. and the use went up big time from 40-80mg on a Friday night to 80mg daily.
They want to kick the stuff, but they have so much to lose if they get help.
SWIM is a registered nurse with access to opiates on a daily basis and although they have never abused their position to get opiates it's something that if they visit a doctor surely their job would be over?
So my question is what is the likely chance of this person kicking it without any professional help or counselling? Is this situation flawed from the get go and in your opinions should SWIM quit their career and get the help or can it be done solo and most importantly without relapse.
They are stuck, desperate to get back to a normal way of life but they worry if they lose their career the use will spiral out of control?

Welcome, based on what you've said your use is already out of your control otherwise you would just stop. It's difficult to stop and not start again at this point without help of some kind. It's not clear to me why you would lose you job if you get help. The centers or Dr's that provide this type of help respect confidentiality. I think before you can get helpful suggestions we would need to know why getting help would get you fired. (insurance, small community)?. Also do you have any vacation time or leaves of absence available to you? Hopefully you can get clean and keep your career. Please get back to us and help clarify your situation, we're here to help.

Ive been in your situation, stem. The detoxing part, while no doubt shitty, is actually the easy part. As dtbt said, take some vacation time, go somewhere where you have no access and kick. In a weeks time I think you should be strong enough to go back to work. Now not relapsing; it really is the more difficult part of the situation and this may require outside assistance but if youre committed to sobriety it can be done alone. I do recommend having a spouse/friend/family member around for support though.

Thankyou for your replies, I feel like they could lose their job as the doctor has a duty of care not just for swim but the people swim cares for. Under certain situations confidentiality can be broken and Im not sure this would qualify, if swim doctor finds out they are a nurse with access to controlled drugs I'm fairly confident in the interest of swim and due to the nature of swim career confidentially may be able to be breached. It's the not knowing what will happen that's so worrying for swim.
