I met her at the airport bar, alone, frightened, her hands trembling. Her plane had almost crashed, she told me. One of the engines blew as it was landing. It was late, and her flight was supposed to go straight to Los Angeles, with only this one stop in this tiny city to refeul. One tiny city between between her past and future. And now she was stuck, here, in the present, until the next day.
She explained to me, as we sat at the bar, tears rolling down her eyes, that she wanted to become an actress. Her dream, like so many others before her, was to become rich and famous. I couldn't find it in my heart to tell her that wasn't likely to happen, but I could see it in her eyes, as tears dripped slowly down, that she already knew.
She asked me where I was from, and where I was headed. I told her Los Angeles, New York City. I was headed there on business. I was meeting with a rather wealthy couple who were looking to procure my services. I never told her what it was I did.
She asked me what I wanted in life, and I told her I wanted to fall in love. She gasped. She stared at me for a number of moments, not sure what to make of me. Tall, deep blue eyes, broad shoulders, slicked back hair. It can't be that hard for a guy like you to find someone to fall in love with, can it, she asked.
I finished my drink, and smiled. It can when everyone wants to be an actress, and no one wants to be themselves, i said, as I paid for our drinks and left.
I could see her reflection in the window as I walked away, tears still rolling down her face, a look of sadness in her eyes. There was no one left in the bar. And all she had between her and her future was one lonely night in Tupelo.
