Old age creeping on.......

Thanks guys!

Ok, if you're in Canberra and you see an ageing Welshman, dancing like he's lost his zimmer frame, and moaning cos he aint got a source for the necessaries yet, that's me. Come up and say hi!

Cheer's M'dears.

there is no need to worry about your age man, there is plenty of people that i am sure everyone would consider "old" that go to all the clubs, as i said just find out what club has the music you like and go and party your arse off!

It really shouldn't be too much of an issue, there's a few older people that go out in Canberra, but nowhere specifically.. I really haven't noticed any sort of bias against older punters around the place, because Canberra is a fairly conservative drinking town, and we need all the clubbers we can get :)

Keep in mind that there isn't a good single club to go out to each week, it's all to do with the events that are going on here.. There's no real music policies at any of the clubs, more the club nights themselves...

For example, this Easter long weekend there is a fair bit of stuff on:

Thursday
Amusek - Club Mombasa - $5 (Techno/Ghetto Tek/I'm playing live :p)
Friction's 2nd B'day - Lot 33 - $12 (Breaks/House)
Rebirth - Babylon - TBA (Breaks/Hard Dance)
Substance - Corvo's - Free (Prog/House)

Friday
Ug Beats - Areebar - $3 (Trance/Tech/House/Prog/$2 schooners ;))

Saturday
Fuse - Babylon - $5 (Tribal/Prog/Breaks/DnB/Hip Hop)
Andrew James - Insomnia - $5 (Trance/Hard Dance/House)

Sunday
Easter Sunday Party - Babylon - TBA (Trance/Hard Dance)
Goodwill & Declan Lee - Lot 33 - $10 (House)

There aren't ANY clubs that will openly accept drug use, because it is illegal. However, you are never short of finding a gurner at any event anywhere these days :p

Just popping up to add more thanks!

Do the clubs here have dress codes, or just come as you please?

Still looking for a "mature" clubber to act as a guide, but may check out some of the Trance nights that are going.

I get the free mag BMA, but it's not good for club guides. Where should I be checking?

Dante, I think we IM'd a couple of times when I was back in the UK, am I right? Thanks! You said you play "Techno/Ghetto Tek" sorry, I'll have to plead ignorance on that, WTF is it? :)

All, many many thanks for the welcome, looking forward to getting up and shaking my saggy arse soon!

Love
Stroppygob.

Hi Stroppygob. I'm a 40 y.o. guy. Do my clubbing in Sydney.

I've never experienced agism on the door. I have felt self-conscious sometimes when I'm the oldest person in a club, but I generally find most people very friendly.

My picks:

1. Sounds On Sunday @ The Greenwood Hotel in North Sydney - 3 music styles in 3 rooms including the outdoor courtyard. From midday to 10pm usually. I like to think of it as a quintessential Sydney experience although Melbourne has its own infrequent Sounds On Sunday now. Great trance and hard house in The Chapel. Plenty of non-stop dancing. Gets crowded for big event days e.g. Easter Sunday. Less crowded on an ordinary Sunday.
To get in the door - no singlets or sleeveless Tees. No visible tattoos. Come with good attitude. Smile at the scary looking door security guys. You can look at the pics on website.

go to www.soundsonsunday.com.au

2. After Ours @ YU - SOHO bar in Victoria Street, Kings Cross. From 10pm Sunday night to 6am Monday morning. Great place to go after SoundsOnSunday when you want to kick on. House and breaks. Lots of dancing - but can get hot and crowded. Have a shower and tidy up after Sounds b4 you come here. But dress policy on Sunday nights is reasonably relaxed. Less relaxed on Friday and Saturday nights. Come with good attitude and smile.

3. ARQ on Flinders Street off Oxford Street. Gay club. Never failed to have a great time here. I'm usually not the oldest person here. Do not go if ur not prepared to dance with your shirt off. Generally tolerant of my wife and I. Doesn't matter what you wear on top, cos you'll be takin it off. Jeans and good runners. If you take your (female) partner with you it's a good idea to go in a bit separately, otherwise they think you've just come to look at the spectacle. Come with open mind. Saturday night is best night of week.

4. Plastic. Has now moved to Tantra on Oxford Street. haven't tried it at that location yet but is highly regarded.
Not sure about dress code these days. The website will give you the flava - look at the pics.

I've heard and read plenty of good things about other places, but can't give them my personal rec.

Bring your photo ID to all places - it will probably be checked on the door regardless of how old you look.

I have seen people who appear to be under the effects of drugs in each of these places. I have also seen strict security in all of these places. I have seen undercover police in some of these places from time to time.NSW police also use drug sniffer dogs in raids on clubs and during stop and search operations on Sydney streets. These include the streets around YU, ARQ, and Tantra. Read more at the NSW Council for Civil Liberties site

For general information about clubbing in Sydney and Canberra, and Melbourne (I grew up there!) you could try

Oh, and the Club Plastic link is
www.clubplastic.com.au

Sorry if some of these sites are not hyperlinked, but I had some trouble.

p.s. - I forgot - TechNiKal @ Chinese Laundry, around the back of the Slip Inn, Sussex Street. Can be a bit choosy about dress - bangin music.

Welcome

I may not be anywhere near my 40's, but my personal recommendation would be the Sunny parties in Melbourne which are held about once every 4 weeks. :)

I've met up with old Strop a few times now, he happens to live next door to a Canberra DJ friend of mine. :)

Hope you're doing well mate, haven't heard from you in a long time. If you read this, drop us a line sometime :)
