in which case it sounds like you'd prefer a national proportional representation system which just ignores the states altogether...

why not just abolish all states?

im open to all ideas. Call me crazy , but I value the opinions of the voters themselves, not imaginary lines on a map.

For sure, innovation is essential. The suggestion itself isn't crazy, I'm just trying to wrap my head around how it could realistically function. I think that may be the whole point, though, it would be an attempt to change how the country operates completely instead of trying to address a singular problem.

well, if so, i guess it would be somewhat humorous if he hadn't clearly and unequivocally condemned rioting and looting...

alasdair

Rioting by whom? BLM? Antifa? To my knowledge he has condemned 'rioting and looting' as a general practice without actually naming anyone who is doing it.

So, 'clearly and unequivocally' on the concept...not in application.

is that in NY or NJ? Just want to make sure the right governor is in attendance.

^ funny.

well, i think "i want to be very clear about all of this: rioting is not protesting. looting is not protesting. setting fires is not protesting. none of this is protesting. it's lawlessness, plain and simple. And those who do it should be prosecuted..." sends a clearer, stronger message than some of these white-supremacist nazis are fine people...

but what do i know?

it's not a direct quote - hence it's not in quote marks.

what president trump actually said, in the aftermath of the events in charlottesville, was that there were "very fine people on both sides". well, one side was white supremacists and neo-nazis so, by definition, he feels some of those white supremacists and/or neo-nazis are very fine people.

^this is some vile shit. After all that's happened you have the audacity to call cops that shoot and injure people "good cops"?

You consider the cops sitting in their car in LA, shot multiple times, to be bad cops? They weren't doing anything but sitting in their car. And these attacks on cops will continue, I have no doubt. Not cops getting killed in a shootout with a bad guy, not dirty cops getting set up by the bad people they work with, but good people who chose to be cops. I have friends in the force and know they are good people. I'm afraid for their lives when citizens will walk up and shoot to kill unprovoked.

There's no such thing as good cops. If they try to be upright, they get fired.

You can have your opinion, doesn't make it fact. My opinion, based on cops I know personally, differs from your opinion. That, i can provide as fact.

still big fans of the Senate @alasdairm and @Deru ?

2 senators per state, representing anywhere from 580,000 citizens to 39,500,000 citizens ... deciding who is going to fill a lifetime spot on the Supreme Court. The house, that truly represents the people, has no say whatsoever.

because of this ridiculous and outdated system, women in the US face having their abortion rights being taken away. Homosexuals face their marriage rights taken away. And Americans with pre existing conditions are getting ready to go back to the reality of being uninsured.

Again... the two Senators representing 580,000 citizens cancel out the two senators representing nearly 40,000,000 citizens.

Please... please explain to me why this is good.

i don't think either @Deru or i claimed to be "big fans of the senate". we just offered you an opinion based on the current situation via a vis two chambers.

do you think the Senate should remain as is, or not? It's pretty simple.

Please... please explain to me why this is good.

It's a process to establish an accurate representation of the population over time. Whether we want to admit and/or like it or not, the majority of our citizen's did elect for the Senate majority and President to be Republican. That's why our country typically ebbs and flows between "right and left."

I'm not saying it's perfect. I've conceded it can not be. I just think a unicameral legislature may be more imperfect.
