I am grateful that:
1) We live in a world in which so many great things have been brought within our horizon, that to earlier generations would have been little more than wishful fantasy. That of which others could only dream, we can nearly grasp.
2) That individuals have enough moral compass to be aggrieved at certain things in this world. That's right, I'm grateful for the Grievances thread.
3) That I have heat indoors, a soft place to sleep at night, food to eat, water to drink, good friends and family (with faults of course), and goals and pursuits that I enjoy even though they are sometimes frustrating and difficult.
4) That it is possible for so many strangers to converse with one another, take an interest in each other's thoughts, problems, and triumphs, and in some way expand the web of relationships that define the human community.
It is characteristic and prophetic that human beings, in the deepest darkness of the year, should carefully note the turning, the subtle increase in daylight even as temperatures continue to drop, and hold a celebration in recognition. Sometimes we need rituals to better thread a new realization, fact, or hope, into our existence. To this extent, they are all equally meaningful, important, and good. So whatever ritual you happen to practice, happy holidays.

*I realize that I am betraying a Northern Hemisphere bias. To the people of the Southern Hemisphere: it's already nearly summer for you, and that should be enough.
