Obtaining a Job With Gauged Ears

Bob, you're still young. If you want to gauge your ears, then do it. If you decide to do so, just make sure you take proper care of them so they ARE able to heal up for when you do decide to get a job after you're done with your college degree(s). You have a while until this happens. Do what makes you happy.

I wouldn't hire anybody who had their ears gauged to that size.

Why don't you spend more time trying to figure out what it is you want to do first, then decide what you want to do later?

Anything that will permanently disfigure you unless you're rich or a rock star is a no in my book

I heard that once you go to certain sizes, there is no going back, that's not true?

That depends on the size, yes, and also how it is done. My ears were gauged larger at one point in my life (1/2"), and I never had any problems with getting them down to a 00g. I have had plugs fall out at night, and they have shrank considerably even over night.

The sizes that Bob is posting may not return, but I will try to summon someone in here who is in the know. :)

I'm gonna have to join the list of naysayers on this one. I was into piercings when I was in high school and by the time I was a sophomore in college, I was totally over it. I only had my lobes stretched to 6g and there are still fairly obvious holes/scars from where they were (this is two years after removal). I don't know if you're in high school or currently attending a university, but at your age, your tastes and interests will change very rapidly and this is a pretty big decision. Let me put this in perspective for you, if you were interviewing five candidates for a job, all with similar qualifications, why would you hire the one with enormous holes in their ears (a potential turn-off for clients) over one of the other four who just looked like an "average Joe?" From an employer's standpoint, they want to make money...making conservative customers uncomfortable is counterproductive to their goals. With the job market in shambles and an influx of recently laid-off job seekers (who already have experience) competing with recent-grads, you're simply not going to be pleased with the consequences this decision will have on your career path. You need to improve your marketability for the future economic climate, and socially-unacceptable body modification will do the exact opposite. Your priorities and beliefs may be very different from my own, but I don't see how anyone can justify severely damaging their lifetime earning potential for stretched lobes; it's simply not an even trade off.

First off, I'm delighted to here your considering modifying your body. I feel that when done properly, gauged piercings are an absolute beautiful addition to the human figure. In response to the issue at hand, it's going to be a matter of sizing up your desire to have big ears, with the hardships you'll possibly face when pursuing employment.

Assuming your starting from scratch, it's going to take you at least 6 years to get up to the size you want (looks like an inch to me, although I can't really tell), so you have plenty of time.

I wouldn't mind something in computers (though I'd have a lot to learn) or music. I'm really open to anything other than something with really demanding physical labor or child/old people interaction.

I was at 3/4 of an inch last time I had a job interview but I had bought a pair of flesh colored plugs made of dental acrylic which I absolutely LOVED. I highly advocate getting yourself a new pair of these whenever you go up in size and wearing them for any positions where your employer might frown upon noticable jewelry (opalite stone, bright glass, and especially tunnels).

That depends on the size, yes, and also how it is done. My ears were gauged larger at one point in my life (1/2"), and I never had any problems with getting them down to a 00g. I have had plugs fall out at night, and they have shrank considerably even over night.

Quite a few variables here to consider. I have friends who've been up to 7/8th and their ears have managed to close up almost seemingly, but the tissue is noticeably altered. Stretching up to anything over half an inch is going drastically change your lobes and the size at which ears will shrink varies quite a bit. For example my ears are currently a touch below half an inch down from a full inch, and like I mentioned I've been without jewelry for about 3 months, so I can stretch back up and eventually get to a larger size. Their never going to get any smaller.

RR: Talk about a wierd coincidence recieving your PM, I just witnessed the wildest thing ever. My girlfriend set up a suspension rig in our living room and I got to help out hoisting up my upstairs roomie. Got some neat pics I'll send you :).

I'm sorry I can't really get into this further since it's such fun subject matter right now I'll come back in a little bit.

^Thank you, please explain more later (and RR of course) :)

I know a little about how to properly gauge and avoid blow-outs, and I'll certainly look into it more once I start (as at some point in my life will, even if only to a small size).

animal cookie, would you mind saying what those people do?

^my friend making minimum wage(ish) works in a grocery store, my friend making the big bucks is a computer programmer. most of the other people i know who have to follow dress codes work in customer service jobs. the people that don't have dress codes, work in academia or other jobs that don't have face to face interaction with the public. then again, i can think of people i know who contradict the above assumptions.

its all going to depend on your field and the type of job you want and the company you end up working for. i do not think that is one "right" answer to your question...

Depends on the job...

A lot of the commericials chains-- in food industry and retail-- have it written in their contracts that they don't allow piercings or tattoos period and that's just their rule. Independent owned stores are more flexible, depends on the owner.

Obviously if you want to work in an office enviroment they most likely won't hire you. Food will be the most difficult, even lower priced restaraunts often don't allow piercings. My old boss explained it as "I don't want to look at a ring in someone's nose while I'm ordering food."

Food is the worst industry.

People are so fucking rude to waitresses/baristas/servers/etc it's ridiculous.

I was a barista for a year or so, it was OK. A waitress for a summer, never going back. Tips are good though.

I used to have 1" ears and was the supervisor of 50 people at a verizon telemarketing center (My teams slogan? "MAKE A SALE DO A RAIL) and they never gave me any shit

it was hard to get a job though when the old place i worked at while i was stretching my ears upto 1" and no where, no where that you deal with coustomers like fast food or in the mall or whatever would hire me

Thankfully i havn't had a "real" job in 8 years so i can do whatever the fuck i want with my body, my ears are only 7/15th now, cuz buddy, lemme tell you, if you live in a place with a cold winter, i mean cold (its -30celc usually in winter, upto -60 -70 in feb with windchill) and you have large flesh tunnels (I had double flared 1" tunnels)
IT FUCKING HURTS

IT HURTS SO MUCH WHEN YOUR STRETCHED EARS (My ears lobes are super thin from being stretch, like only a few mm thick) GET COLD so if you live somewhere cold, id say only go to 7/15" that was the biggest size i could do without making my ears hurt so bad.

maybe you you should of thought of it before hand. Actions have consequences, and the consequences of looking like a [<snip>-RR] mean its harder to find a job.

There's a difference between giving in to the man and being able to financially support one's self ;).

Why do people even want to do that to their ears? It looks super disgusting. Almost as gross as people getting their napes pierced and the inside of their gums pierced.

^That's a very broad, very subjective statement. I personally think that if someone properly gauges their ears then it looks very nice. Same for snakebites, septum piercings, cheek piercings, monroes, etc.
