Obama blasts war on drugs: ‘It’s been very unproductive’
By Ben Wolfgang - The Washington Times - Thursday, April 9, 2015

President Obama on Thursday said America’s decades-long war on drugs has been “unproductive” and that sending low-level narcotics offenders to prison tears apart families and leads to even more crime.

Speaking at a town-hall meeting in Kingston, Jamaica, the president said U.S. drug policy must be revamped. But he also said it’s unlikely the U.S. will take steps to decriminalize or legalize marijuana anytime in the near future.

“I am a very strong believer that the path we have taken in the United States in the so-called war on drugs has been so heavy in emphasizing incarceration that it has been counterproductive,” he said. “You have young people who did not engage in violence who get very long penalties, who get placed in prison and then are rendered economically unemployable, are almost pushed into the underground economy, learn crime more effectively in prison — families are devastated. So it’s been very unproductive.”

Mr. Obama also praised “unlikely allies” on Capitol Hill — presumably referring to Sen. Rand Paul, Kentucky Republican, among others — who want to work with the administration on reforming the nation’s drug sentencing practices.

The president also said the federal government will keep a close eye on how marijuana legalization works out in Colorado and Washington, but he does not expect major overhauls in national policy in the next several years.

perfect description for the us congress. O is not a king or a dictator;)

I know right.. I always see people on this site getting mad because Obama hasn't ended the war on drugs, as if he can just wave his hand and make it so... They definitly don't understand how the American political system works...

^^Got ya... Politics are all bullshit anyways.. Two sides that oppose each other no matter what the issue is.. We need a Caesar... Haha.. Just kidding.. What if our Republic suffers the same fate as the Roman republic? I could see it happening in the future..

According to Obama's Attorney General Eric Holder, an executive order from the PotUS can force a Schedule I drug - such as THC (Cannabis) - to be placed into Schedules II to V. And it does not require Congressional approval, nor petitioning the DEA to do so. Whether individual state governing bodies would choose to acknowledge and follow suit remains to be seen, but let's cross that bridge when we get to it.

At the very least, Obama could have signed such an order to place THC (Cannabis) in Schedule III, which would have been a sensible (and rational) move because, to this day, the DEA continues to raid Medical Marijuana dispensaries in states where its prescription has been legalized.

Furthermore, our extremely passive, golf-loving PotUS could have terminated Michelle Leonhart's employment as DEA Administrator the day she publicly behaved in a manner many employers would have considered insubordinate towards them. However, other than a supposed pep-talk, Obama seems to have done little to nothing about the incident. And I find it rather curious that, even after the recent revelations about her underlings partying with hookers in Columbia; even after her decision to suspend three agents and nothing more; even after a public statement of "no confidence" from a majority (bipartisan) group of House Oversight Committee lawmakers, it looks like Obama will still seemingly sit on his hands and do nothing but assume an all-too-common position which frankly feels devoid of any assertiveness.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm not a fan of American 'quick-fixes,' as they usually end up being a terrible investment in the long term (e.g. the war on drugs), and I strongly believe that patience is indeed a virtue, but dammit Mr. President, move your ass and act like you did during your 2008 campaign and make good on more of those promises you seem to have forgotten about.

Yes, I (at least personally) am very thankful that he has pardoned a significant amount of convicts who were doing time for simple possession and such, as they did not deserve to be persecuted and prosecuted simply because their intoxicant of choice was not one which is embraced by this ass-backwards, money worshiping, religiously influenced, fast-paced, greedy as hell, work-work-work society we live in at present.

Can Obama; can any PotUS single-handedly end this war on (certain) drugs? Not that I know of, but at the same time, he (or she) is certainly not powerless, yet Obama certainly seems to act like he is.

So yeah, I feel the man has been a disappointment overall. Whether that will change in the coming months and/or in the final year of his 2nd term remains to be seen. I am hoping that it'll be so, but I'm not holding my breath, because it has become disturbingly clear that, if there's one thing above all else that politicians seem to excel at, it is lying.
