thanks for the info. i got that line straight of the burning man website, so i'd advise people to call their local ticket outlet before they just show up expecting to buy tickets.

i've got a good friend in the ticket office, so i don't worry about such trivialities ;)

see you on the playa...

this will be my 5th year.

i've been involved with a number of different camps in various capacities, most notably lamplighters, bianca's, the BRCPO (post office), and camp Want It. though i will have a home, i'll be mostly mobile this year, both playing records at various camps and running a mobile sake bar that circulates around the large scale sound installations around sunrise. i'm also co-managing a huge party in center camp on monday night if you'd like to stop by.

got anything cool planned that i should check out?

Any advice --

hmmm... the burning man website is pretty exhaustive as far as preparation advice, but here are a few things that have helped me:

1. take the burning man Survival Guide seriously. they know what they're talking about. no matter how "hardcore" you think you are, the environment out there is going to present some challenges.

2. always carry water. oh, and drink it.

3. understand that you're not going to be able to see everything. armed with this knowledge, pace yourself appropriately. allow yourself to get lost in whatever activity you stumble upon.

4. sleep. i think the people that talk about how they went to burning man, partied their asses off all day and all night and never slept might be missing out on some things. with everything that's going on out there, you become a risk to yourself and to those around you if you deprive yourself of too much sleep. don't worry about what you're going to "miss" by sleeping. (refer to item #2.) chances are there will be something just as cool happening when you awaken.

5. zip-ties and/or duct tape can fix nearly everything out there.

6. baby wipes are from heaven. you'll be amazed at how clean and refreshed a simple baby wipe scrub-down can make you feel out there. the "wet ones" brand is lovely and doesn't make you smell like an infant with diaper rash.

7. take it easy on the alcohol. there are SO many booze-themed parties out there, and it's kind of dangerous considering how dehydrated your body will naturally become in the desert. alcohol might affect you a bit differently than your used to, so go slow. you'll find that it's much less necessary as a social lubricant out there than what you're used to... things are already naturally pretty "lubed".

8. make sure your bike doesn't suck, functionally speaking. a bike that is really uncomfortable to ride totally limits the areas that you're likely to explore.

i could keep going, but i think these are a few of the more important points.

let me know if you want advice on anything more specific and i'll try to help you out.

Very cool...this will be my 9th year in the Playa.

Bianca's....i miss that place from the old days !!

What do you spin ?? We are building a "rave" bus of sorts...always looking for dj's.

In 2002, we did a rave camp there, Basswave Marina, at 10 o'clock and the Esplanade....lottsa work but a good time.

Does anyone know of any big dj's making an appearance at Burning Man this year ??

I know that D:Fuse will be there for his first time...also Sandra Collins should be back, and the guys from Moontribe should be back as well.

Anyone have any more dj's they know of ??

why exactly does it cost money to go to this event. i always assumed that it was free. its a gathering in the middle of the desert. why do you have to pay someone for this? what are you provided with for this big chunk of cash? do the profits go towards a cause? how exactly do they charge you if it is, in fact, in the middle of nowhere.

pardon my ignorance...

well, first of all the event is on public land in Nevada which requires very expensive permits from the Bureau of Land Management.

there are also port-a-potties and other infrastructure that is provided by the organization. burning man has a year-round staff that must be paid as well. beyond that, the attendees really aren't "provided" with much. self-reliance and self-sufficiency are central tenets of the event.

they charge for tickets beforehand, and there is a gate at the entrance. if you don't have a ticket, you don't get in, plain and simple. the boundaries are patrolled by law enforcement officers as well as burning man staff. if you thought this was a giant free event, you might have been thinking of the Rainbow Gathering.

lots of people wonder where their money goes since ticket prices seem so high, so the org has made their finances transparent and given the entire community access to the details. here's an actual chart of expenditures made by the burning man organization in 2003 if you're curious as to where the money goes:

the whole "big DJs" thing kind of rubs me the wrong way unless it's totally unannounced. big name DJs having a scheduled performance and attracting a concert-goer mentality makes it really hard to discourage people from describing burning man as a big rave.

basswave marina was great that year john. i saw the sunrise after the burn dancing right there :)

i will not be at burning man this year. also, magicglasses camp has been officially wound up. we've decided to "quit while we're ahead" so to speak.

we did sell our 40' dome to somebody else so there will be a little bit of magicglasses camp on the playa. i'm sure a load of ex-magicglasses people will be there so eyes peeled :)

have a wonderful time and give the playa my regards.

Dina did kick much ass that year !!

I'm trying to talk her into going this year...hopefully.

11 days until the gate opens !!

Well, it does look like Dina will be staying in CA during Burning Man for this year. It's going to be strange not seeing her spinnin' on the Playa.
