This may be a little unconventional for a forum primarily based on drugs of "abuse" but I think it fits best here.

What are your guys favourite NSAID drugs (if you use them), and why? Aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac? Do you find NSAIDs effective for pain?

I think Ibuprofen is the best.

If I have a bad headache I drink a glass of water and drink a can of coke. Then if it still hurts I take 800 mg of Ibuprofen
Toradol is a little stronger but it can only be used 5 days in a row.

Ibuprofen works the best for me, does wonders for tooth related pain. My only problem with it is as of late it causes me horrible pains in my stomach after one or two uses, like stabbing pains. I don't think I have an ulcer or anything because it never hurts otherwise but I know it can cause issues like that and you're not supposed to take but so much in one day (which I don't, rarely get near the daily limit).

I actually had to take T3's instead of Ibuprofen after my last wisdom tooth extraction because I just couldn't stomach the stuff anymore. Thankfully my tolerance was low enough that the T3's were effective. They do fuck all for the swelling though.

Aspirin I'm not allowed to take anymore. :(

I can't anymore, took way too many for my sore back and now even a tiny dose will give me the most horrid stomache ache :(

With Advil and other NSAID drugs, you can get stomache ulcers with just 1 pill. Eat some crackers or drink a small amount of milk to help prevent this. I take Zantac every day and it help with my stomache issues. I am prone to stomache ulcers and really shouldn't take it but when your body hurts you will do anything to make it stop.

Also with NSAID's watch for heart problems. They have a warning and increase the risk of heart disease.

I have acid reflux but rarely take anything for it, as of late it hasn't been that bad anyway. If I do take something I have plenty of Nexium on hand.

So you're saying they can cause an ulcer after just one use? Never knew that, I've taken them before for a week or so and had no problems with them but the last go round with ibuprofen was horrible, the pain it caused it my gut was almost as bad at the infected wisdom tooth. :(

For skeletal/muscle pain like a bad back naproxen is the best for me. It has an extra advantage of 10-12 hour dosing instead of 4-6 hour dosing.

I think many people end up choosing a NSAID by sticking with the first one that worked well without causing GI problems, something that's going to vary from person to person.

Cox-2 specific meds like celecoxib seldom have GI distress but many Doctors around here treat Cox-2 inhibitors as an absolute last resort ever since Vioxx got pulled off the market. Supposedly herbs like tumeric and boswellia contain natural cox-2 NSAID chemicals. Aspirin is my number 2 NSAID after naproxen.

Yes ma'am, just one tablet resting in your stomache can cause an ulcer. The risk varies between people but it's still a risk. I was told to be very careful and watch for signs of bleeding. Signs of bleeding ulcers are; bloody vomit, abd pain or nausea, black tarry stools. If its lower in the gi track you have bright red stools. It's unlikely it will happen but it does happen.

I was really lucky to not experience adverse side effects from taking ketorolac. At the time, I was prescribed a lot of APAP in vicodin tablets, as well as diclofenac, and the ketorolac. I never took all three at the same time. 8(

It's "sir" but thanks for begin polite all the same. :)

I think I was getting some bleeding but the pain was enough for me to know that it was time to stop and switch things up. Thankfully I ended up with some T3's as stated in my last post.

I'll make sure to try another NSAID next time...sucks though because I just bought two big bottles of Ibuprofen because they were on sale at wal-mart. :(

I really wish codeine was OTC in some formulation in the states...it's just crazy to me that they won't allow it to be OTC now-a-days. I wouldn't mind having to sign a piece of paper or something for it and I wouldn't even CWE it. Sometimes I need something stronger than Tylenol, and I can't have Aspirin. Plus, I don't like having to go to the doctor any time I need codeine for minor pain or cough. I really like codeine because it is good for minor pain and coughs without giving me the urge to catch a buzz from it. Used to be OTC in my state but they changed the laws about ten years ago -,-.

At any rate, I'm going to give Naproxen a try and see if I have any issues with it.

I like ibuprofen because time and time again it has proven to be very effective for all kinds of mild to moderate pain. IMO, 600 to 800 mg is at least as effective for pain as a Tylenol #3 is and more effective than 50-100 mg tramadol. Whenever I've had a headache, even a bad one, ibuprofen will often completely kill the pain. I take 400 mg for a mild headache or toothache, but if the pain is a bit more intense I'll dose 600 mg and it always works. When I get really bad back pain 800 mg and the pain is either taken away completely or it becomes very mild.

It doesn't work for more severe pain, but it does help somewhat if you take 800 mg. It's my personal favorite NSAID.

Naproxen is good too, but fenoprofen and ketoprofen are even better.

NSAIDS as a group are usually very effective for pain, IMO. They are way better than acetaminophen/paracetamol, which never does anything for me.

Oh. My bad. Lol!! It's so hard to tell by the names. I'll remember that next time :)

I take Advil. I prefer it because I have easy access to it and it's cheap. It works for me.

I also find that it helps to reduce pain from withdrawals. Helps migraine headaches and works well as a fever reducer. When I have a throbbing headache with fever that's what I go for. Narcotic won't touch my headache when it's fever related.

Naproxen is just about the only medicine I can find that will cut the pain of the bad sinus headaches I get during allergy season without being too overpowering.

I pretty much destroyed my stomach taking ibuprofen and naproxen for years for my teeth. I thought I'd never be able to use NSAIDs again. Then my doc prescribed me a low dose of meloxicam, and it kicks ass on the inflamation pain in my knee that the Vicodin doesn't touch, and after almost a year, no stomach problems!

First time I was prescribed (30 years ago) the original 800mg Motrin, I had adverse reactions...burning pains inside my abdomen accompanied w/ hives on the outside. I had previous less serious reactions with (double) doses of tylenol & aspirin but didnt realize it until the motrin incident. Dr. told me not to use any type of anti-imflammatories. I do wish I could use them, still think the 81mg daily aspirin is a miracle pill for a lot of people.

I prefer the effervescent aspirin tablets (w/ caffeine) for headaches and such, easier on the stomach than regular aspirin, and works really fast.
