NSA surveillance thread

I find it funny that people are all up in arms over this now.

Some of us were alarmed when they forced the Patriot Act through, and all the other bits of law allowing this behaviour. But we got denounced as conspiracy theorists ¬_¬

^ I don't think anyone was labeled a "conspiracy theorist" for being alarmed at the Patriot Act or other privacy-eroding legislation. Pretty much any human with a functioning brain realizes those are bad things.

Its not even a matter of trust, privacy, safety, or being intrusive. Its silly. I even doubt the legal ramifications of the information gathered even if you had a personal conspiracy of committing criminal or terrorist activities. By the sounds of it, the systems in place seem largely inaccurate at best.

Besides, if you have a clean criminal record, and are a citizen of a Western country the government, and the police better have a damn good reason to be sticking its nose in your business, ie: you are committing a criminal offense. Largely because legally said government or agency would be in a heap of legal trouble if they accidentally raided Grandma's proverbial cookie cupboard at the request of some computer.

And probably anybody who is involved in any sort of conspiracy is avoiding the Internet like the plague if they have one iota of intelligence.

What the hell are you talking about? Being against the Patriot act is not a conspiracy theory. Polls show the public is actually relatively split on the issue.

Just for fun ill quote myself from a couple weeks ago on this forum before this story broke

How about we Disband the TSA, repeal the Patriot act, end the war in Afghanistan and close Guantanamo?

^ When the Patriot Act was first pushed through, I recall reading that anyone speaking out against it was considered a traitor and some of those who spoke out against it were put on No Fly Lists. Maybe the last thing could be a conspiracy, but I mean, do you not recall people saying they were OK with it because they "had nothing to hide?" And the unspoken implication that if you disagreed with it, you were hiding something?

I also recall people saying Sarah Palin would have made a good Vice President, it doesn't mean I take those people's opinions seriously.

People have historically done dumb things when they're under assault. We had our freedom fries. WWII London had its dachshund stonings.

What is surprising is that a) people are actually getting upset because they imagine they should have some sort of expectation of privacy despite that notion being contrary to how the internet works, and b) that the NSA hasn't been doing this all along.
Both things are true. Contrary to what Obama and the NSA with their damage control claim yeah they can and do listen to your phone calls, read your emails, etc. and save them. The Patriot Act is largely classified and yet congress, and all sort of politicians completely support it and Tricky Obama is not going to get rid of it, and people will claim that it's OK because it will prevent things from happening and save lives but that's not true and it takes away from people's freedoms.

DONT YOU FIND IT IRONIC THAT THEY DIDNT LIKE ALREADY KNOW WHO THE WHISTLEBLOWER WAS????????????????????

Sorry for the all caps it just seems silly. Well ok then back to my regularly scheduled fearmongering and paranioa

i'm not surprised, i thought this had been known for years now.

what disgusts me are the obama apologists. obama is not a good president, he is not "liberal" he's george bush part 2.

Yup, and how he's very low on the totem pole just like how a certain gay private who is claiming he's transgendered to get off with an insanity plea which won't work since just because someone's transsexual/transgendered it does not make them mentally ill, somehow had access to highly classified info.

I hope they didn't do that to a lot of Dachshund dogs, or other German dogs like Giant Schnauzers or German Shepherds. :(

So, what's the consensus opinion on this? How many buy the government line that "It's OK because it's for your safety..... you can't have 100% safety without sacrificing a 'minimal' amount of privacy... you can trust us..." [to summarize Obama as paraphrased in a wall street journal article today.]

When does one get to the point that they would rather live with a little danger and keep their privacy than put up with these intrusions (which arguably haven't made us any safer) any longer?

Also, I've read that this has been going on to some extent at least since the Reagan era in the form of ECHELON.

After the irs harrassment of tea party, conservative folks how can anyone believe gov't info won't
be misused if the occaison suits

I was thinking, since attending college and saying you are a foriegn born student in order to get free tuition is a felony,
and holding the office of president with a prior felony is not allowed, why do we have a lying criminal in our white house?

Never use Facebook. In fact, never use your real name online for anything.

Also, addresses are exceedingly easy to find without electronic devices. Why all of a sudden has everyone lost their navigational skills?

So I shouldn't be a fan of BL on Facebook?
