Not paying fines and what to expect?

If you don't pay a fine in the UK... the fine will rise

I got a £28 fine... and if I didn't pay that.. it would rise to £76

None payment round here you have to go to Court, I'm paying a fine of £120 off at £30 per 2 weeks.
It was that or a week in jail.

Good luck.

whoa, that's steep. the thiin the thinng is that they only seem to send the warrants out in the summer. I went a long time without paying, in fact, the only time I paid anything towards the fine was when i was on jsa, they just seem to be able to get into that without you telling them. they can't get into your wages I don't think. nor tax credit. I'm gonna make sporadic payments to keep em away and just turn myself invisible.

they don't like to put people in jail for these things. also, if you do 1/2 a day waiting to go to court, that's a full day served so it's just not worth their while locking you up.

My fine was a public order thing, it was £80 to start with but I left for Norway the same day so I couldn't pay it off till I got back. By then it had gone up to £120 & I had 3 days to pay it, of course I had no way of doing that & was issued a Court date.
Went to the magistrates court on the date & they said pay £30 every 2 weeks or go to jail, tbh I would have done the jail time but I am not on a script & didn't fancy kicking my habit in jail so I took the fine.
If I didn't have the drug issue I would have told the Judge to go fuck himself & waited for G4S to come grab me.

yeah i agree with what everyone else is saying, keep in regular contact with the people you owe and explain your situation - and ask them if you can pay them off in small installments. They will have to come to some sort of compromise.

I know your far from being daft but however desperate you get avoid Wonga and Friday Loans companies and all those "Loan Management" companies. It might be worth contacting the Citizens Advice Bureau, if you get someone who knows what they are talking about they'll be able to give you the best advice.

The worst thing to do is just ignore the fines and not contact them, as they will just keep on slapping more and more penalties on top if you do that.

Offer to be a tourist Guide to some well heeled looking tourists ? Play up your local knowledge and tell them interesting stuff about the area, im sure you could tell them a few interesting tales and show them some interesting things around the area that they probably woulnt have found out about as outsiders. Say there is no charge but any donations would be appreciated. I'm sure you could make some money that way, especially if you approach the woman in a couple, as rumour has it that you are a bit of a "looker".

I know all that is easier said than done. But it could go very well for you.

Indeed -- get in touch with them and tell them you're willing to pay but can't. Hopefully you can arrange small repayments just to keep them off your back. Probably wouldn't be bad thing if it was passed on to a debt collection agency -- they like to inundate you with letters and phone calls, but they probably won't throw you in prison....

Ayee, wonga evil!!! Debt management companies.... definitely not the right thing to do here, but they're not entirely evil. Sure they probably skim off your repayments plenty, but I know someone who went that route after racking up some pretty serious credit card debt, and she doesn't seem to have been bent over. I guess it's to be avoided if you have a choice, she really didn't.

Not paying fines only works if you do it in foreign countries and don't plan on going back. And if both countries are in the EU... well the systems are getting more and more connected so it doesn't really work any more (tho some guy here did win in court because Italy sent him a fine without a translation), unless it's so minor that they don't bother. Probably still stays logged somewhere so best avoid that country for a few years.

In your own country? Well depends on local laws. Some people here won in court against automated traffic cameras because you couldn't make out faces and aren't legally compelled to testify against family (they may have changed this since so that the owner pays unless the driver is found). You can also get lucky and the police make some procedural error (wrong spelling of name in the documentation or something) and the fine is dropped. Or try appealing until (don't know how to say in English.. every crime has a limit on how long it can be prosecuted for) this time runs out (they are trying to make this harder however).

On the other hand, if you pay within 8 days, you only pay half.

I'm from Slovenia.

Oh and then there's of course having no property in your name thing so they can't take anything.

Maybe I explained it badly. Inside the EU - no go. Other countries, they definitely keep a list and if they want you hard enough...
