Getting to the point ...
Growing up, I never read much. I'd read the cliffnotes for any school work (even got by watching videos instead, and once just looked up some titles...but that's another story). I understand HS people, and some college people (to a degree) don't have time or interest in reading something that isn't required. Leisure reading is done in the bathroom or in bed with an active hand.
I also recognize that the majority of this forum is filled with people pouring out their emotions or practicing their artistic communication skills. That's great, and I enjoy reading that stuff.
But part of being a words forum, I would think, is to also work on being smarter about words. I'm wondering how well recieved it would be to have a 'book of the month' going in here. I have heard several BLers swapping books for personal enlightenment and education, and thought 'why limit it to so few people'. I've also reached a point where I no longer read because I have to, but because I want to expand my mind. Personally, I alternate between something that is entertaining and something that would aid my social interaction or career (kinda one serious, then fun, then serious, etc).
The point is that an entertaining book can offer something different to each reader. There are so many levels to be taking in the information, allusions to other aspects of life, symbolism and subtle commentaries. I propose the mods select a book and those with the time and inclination can read a novel and then come back and share insights and revelations. Readers can discuss the author's technique, and perhaps offer suggestions on similar works for those who become engulfed in a story or genre or style.
Just a thought. And I suggest a mod or two lead the story selection (or nominate a well respected member) to limit the flood of people shouting "Read this, I loved it." and also to screen the books a bit to keep out the fluff. Anyone can buy and read fluff, but I was hoping this thread could help us casual readers become more attentive, more cognitive of all the things a book can offer that we missed before. Perhaps raise the literary intellect of people like myself.
Any comments?

hmmmm not a bad idea, Ive never been in a book club ;) lol. Ive got a few books from suggestions off this board and never been dissapointed, VURT by Jeff Noon was a great read that I got off here. but I honestly cant think of any books to discuss, I generally read fantasy and those arent really the sort of books that can really have their content discused, theyre sort of no-brainers. however any suggestions would be good, I think we could make somthing decent out of this if anyone could come up with some decent books.

a while back we had come up with this idea...wow that feels like so long ago. We had so many people interested in the idea, but like many other things it never took off. I personally think its fabulous. I would be up to it. Besides i love to read, and have so many excellent books :) Nice job reid :)

the love bandit - as a huge avid reader im sorry you didnt enjoy it growing up. my 13 year old twins hate to read. i make them read everyday - their choice where they are given libray, book club, and book store books to choose from. this upsets me so much . i would spend a weekend indoors with my nose in a book , my sons perfer riding their bikes, skating, and surfing all day. the are constanly active and excell in those sports.for that i am very proud. i have to understand that they are different then me.
i would love the idea of a bookgroup. just this last month i really wanted to discuss a book that i had read and had to go join a womens magazines bulletin board just so i could discuss it. aggghh!

I'd be totally in for that. I love English classes and the idea behind book clubs, but hate the discussions in them because everyone seems so judgemental. It would feel safer (for me) to discuss the book selection online, I think.
Some cool books I've read in the past few months:
Veronika Decides to Die, P. Coehlo
All Families are Psychotic, D. Coupland
Survivor, C. Palahniuk
screenplay for Sorority Boys
(no, just checking if you were reading. :) )
Anyhow, I guess June would be as good a time as any to start...?

You know I'm all for this! I have been reading avidly since I was 3 years old, and love any chance I can get to discuss books with people who's opinion I trust and respect. And I'm always looking for new book ideas, and hearing about new authors. There is no way I would have the time to help organize something like this, as much as I would love to, but I would be really happy to participate in any way I can.

Ok well can I suggest a book? My mum just finished reading Geek Love by Katherine Dunn and Im about to start it. from what she's told me its excelent!
A carnival family saves its traveling "Carnival Fabulon" from bankruptcy by giving birth to freaks--in a "Ripley's Believe It or Not" world. A National Book Award nominee.
A wild, often horrifying, novel about freaks, geeks and other aberrancies of the human condition who travel together (a whole family of them) as a circus. It's a solipsistic funhouse world that makes "normal" people seem bland and pitiful. Arturo the Aqua-Boy, who has flippers and an enormous need to be loved. A museum of sacred monsters that didn't make it. An endearing "little beetle" of a heroine. Sort of like Tod Browning's Freaks crossed with David Lynch and John Irving and perhaps George Eliot -- the latter for the power of the emotions evoked.
So there we have it, my suggestion for a book. I suppose we should organise this in some way......if Im stepping on any toes here then someone tell me to fuck off but, do we give you say.... a month to read it? sound fair? and anyone who finishes the book early please dont go making posts that give away the end or any important details, plllllease, I hate when people do that. So, do you guys accept my choice of book? I dont really care if we dont get too many people doing this, even just 5 or 6 is cool with me but I really think its a good idea so peoples get reading :)
PS. if you guys agree to this choice then reply and Me or someone else will start a thread for it to be discussed in, and also Im bound to have left out some obvious organisational rule thingies so if anyone has any others please post them :)

Harasser -
How long is the book? Those of us coming up to speed will require longer than your average bear in terms of time to read it. Can we set a date like mid-month (perhaps June 20) to give people time to get into it (perhaps finish it) and digest/think-over the content? Any choice is a good choice to me at this point - just to get things going. I was just hopin gthat everyone could finish (or be near finishing) so that everyone is speaking from the same page (hehe, punny). Well, you get my drift. I'll go buy/rent/steal a copy and try to finish by the 20th.

TLB: 20th is all cool with me, maybe even a little longer.I havent even started it yet, Im almost finished another book that Im reading and then Ill start it, and ive got exams coming up so itll prolly take me a bit to read it, I think its about 300 and something pages, not huge. anyway when we get close to the date Ill put something in the post Kaz made for the disscussion asking people to say where theyre up so so we can know what we can and cant talk about :)
