Drug War Chronicle

08/13/2009

The Tarheel State is about to become the latest to ban salvia divinorum, the potent but fast-acting hallucinogen that has become increasingly popular among young drug experimenters in recent years. A bill that would do that, SB 138, now sits on the desk of Gov. Beverly Perdue, who is expected to sign it. Last week, the House approved the measure by a vote of 94-15. It earlier passed the Senate on a unanimous 45-0 vote.

salvia leaves (photo courtesy Erowid.org)The bill makes possession of salvia an infraction, a minor crime punishable by a maximum $25 fine. A third possession offense would be charged as a misdemeanor. The bill has no separate provisions for charging manufacturing or sales offenses.

The bill includes two exemptions. The first is for ornamental gardening; the second is for university-affiliated researchers.

North Carolina will join 14 other states and a handful of towns and cities that have banned or regulated salvia in recent years, the most recent being the resort town of Ocean City, Maryland, earlier this month. Salvia is not a prohibited controlled substance under federal law, although the DEA is evaluating whether it should be, a process that has gone on for more than five years now.

North Carolina only wants people smoking tobacco. At least the punishment is lighter than other states. But still, it's a step in the wrong direction for personal freedom.

It's great that so much effort was put into this bill, because unlike tobacco Salvia causes so many problems in society. I can't even count the number of teenagers I've seen go on raping and pillaging sprees in the 3 minutes that they were completely incapacitated by Salvia. Fuck this evil plant. Why can't hippies mind their own fucking business and not interfere with the lifestyles of us law-abiding citizens who choose to smoke legal plants like tobacco.

Reminds me of the way the French wine industry attacked Absinthe. All of the 'devils brew'/'narcotic liquor' propaganda from that era is still widely believed by contemporary Europeans and Americans. Hell, look at all of the posts on BL about people thinking they will get a hallucinogenic high from drinking Absinthe.

Though the downfall of Salvia Divinorum is the fault of the early internet-businesses selling it as a 'Marijuana Alternative' or 'legal Cannabis', lying about its effects, one site went so far as to post videos of people smoking Salvia acting like the stereotypical Marijuana smoker (giggling, giddiness, etc).

It would be the equivalent of a Kratom dot-com business running ads that Kratom is 'Legal Heroin' and posted videos of people seconds after drinking a Kratom infused tea nodding, unable to keep their eyes open, etc.

I live in NC and I really don't care. I'm not a fan of salvia and don't find it enjoyable at all.

I'm kind of glad the government and media are chasing the salvia boogey man instead of focusing their energy on san pedro, ayahuasca, n2o, or poppy pods. So yeah it sucks that the government keeps doing this bullshit but it's way better than them going after a substance I enjoy. Some people might say it's a slippery slope but so far none of the above substances are marketed as legal drugs, they all have semi-legit uses so hopefully they'll stay out of the media/government's spot light.

I'd be pissed but honestly salvia is just nasty IMHO. If it were any other substance I'd probably go stock up on it but yuck...it's salvia.

^Fuck that. "Well as long as they ban the drugs I don't happen to personally like, I don't care". You might want to look up once in a while: I think the greater picture just flew over your head. If everybody in NC is as clueless as you then I can see why this stupid bill passed.

Did it ever occur to you that compounds extracted or synthesized from Salvia Divinorum might have legitimate medical potential besides getting you and your NC buddies fucked up after work at Pizza Hut? Potential that will be completely erased if this plant is placed on schedule I?

^^ Good post. I don't want to see anything get banned. People should have the freedom to put any substance into their own bodies. I don't want some strangers telling me what I can't smoke, eat or inhale, etc. People have a right to privacy. Government can keep its big nose out of my private life.

Total bullshit but really has anyone come to expect any different behaviour from the Government? They will systematically ban every legal high in time, then more will be discovered and this cyce will continue. I hope all drugs are legal long before the Government has a chance to play catch up with the increasing amount of available legal highs.

I agree with the people saying it is a stupid attitude to say you don't care about banning a drug just because its not your DOC. As drug users we are all persecuted for our choice to use substances we enjoy, just because you do not enjoy a particular substance does not mean you shouldn't be outraged to see others rights trampled on as yours are.

I understand everyone being pissed about my comments. They were definitely selfish and a bit stupid. I'll go back a little bit on what I said and salvia is definitely an interesting substance and those who wish to use it shouldn't be restricted from doing so. it is fucked up that it's illegal because IMHO this drug isn't the least bit recreational and IMO is only really useful for spiritual use.

I've only lived in NC for a month. But I'd say the majority of people here are much much more closed minded than me and wayyyyy stupider. (hard to believe???lol;))So that's why it passed. And even if the majority of the public didn't agree with this law it still would have passed because the war on drugs is already firmly in place and because of the media's portrayal of salvia. Which was basically handed to them by way of stupid user's youtube videos and through vendors pushing the stuff as legal acid/weed/mushies whatever. If not for the users videos it would have stayed underground and legal. So hopefully this is a message to people using legal highs to stop bragging about it.

It's not being scheduled... yet anyway. And there are plenty of other states where it is completely legal to do research, hopefully with the clock now ticking it will add incentive for researchers to put more effort into finding medicinal uses. And I don't work at pizza hut and I wouldn't touch salvia even if someone paid me to.:p

It's great to post on internet forums about how drugs should be legal and spreading the word. But the problem is that too many of us (myself included) don't actually get involved in the movement. The words of legalization become empty rhetoric when they aren't backed up by action in your community. Before I volunteered for NORML, I touted the legalization rhetoric but did absolutely nothing to back it up with action. While many of you have posted passionately about how messed up this is, I doubt too many of you are actually involved at a political or grassroots level working towards legalization. So sure I deserved to be flamed but what are you doing for legalization? Talking about legalization on bluelight is like pro life people talking about abortion on a pro life message board. Like sure it's great to spread the word but you're mostly only spreading the word to people who already agree with you. (btw I'm not trying to call anyone out, I'm just trying to get people to think about where they're focusing their efforts).

I don't really want to argue with anyone. And if what I said pissed anyone off that much maybe take some of the energy and use it towards getting active in your community. Flaming me accomplishes nothing (even if I deserved it). And if you wanna change people's minds insults aren't usually the best route.

wow im in NC and just bought some salvia a few days ago......really hated it but it still shouldn't be illegal. Though out of any drug salvia is one i really couldn't give a fuck it it became illegal. oh well. glad i tried it when i had the chance.

I'm sorry that I was overly harsh in my post. I realize it was a bit rude. I tend to lash out when I read something that makes my head hurt, and I need to work on that.

It's just that every single time Salvia gets banned in another state someone posts something almost exactly like your previous post, and I'm getting really damn sick of it. Every single time. Another state down, a few dozen more to go. At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if Salvia is federally scheduled by next year. There are many medically promising applications of compounds extracted from Salvia D, and so far there has been only preliminary investigative research done. It would be a tragedy if all research on the plant was forced to cease because people only see it as a way to get messed up. And I don't say tragedy lightly. It would be a mistake of massive proportions.

Looking at it like, "Well, there are a bunch other places that can still do research on it" is missing the point. What happens when a promising researcher at university like UNC: Chapel Hill or Duke decides to follow a lead that involves Salvia D? Chances are they're not going to pick up their life, switch jobs, and move to a different state to do. They'll forget about it and another potential cure will be lying in the dumpster.

However, I completely agree with the sentiments of this:

Very true words.

Edit:

And right after I post this I read matterofperceptions post. It gets frustrating sometimes.

This is seriously making me consider stockpiling Salvia in case it is banned nationwide. This country is going in the wrong direction as usual.

I've seen a poster online and in headshops that said just that, It showed a man with his eyes closed staring heavenward with a slack smile on his face and it said "this is a better buzz than heroin!" with words around the picture like joy and euphoria.
