Norco and Valium to help w/d symptoms from Opana and Oxy

Hello!

Brief history. I have been on opiates for the last 9 years to treat pain resulting from Multiple Sclerosis. The pain can be excruciating. I was prescribed Opana ER 40 mg x 2 daily, plus oxycodone for breakthrough pain.

I decided to go cold-turkey to get off the Opana and Oxy, since I felt they were extremely strong. I'm in day 3 of w/d, and it has been total hell. Most of you are aware of the withdrawal that goes along with strong opiates, so I don't need to list out all the symptoms.

Today I met with my PCP, and he ordered Norco and valium to help with pain and spams associated with MS. The Norco is 10/325 x 6 daily, plus 10 mg valium twice daily. I just took four of the Norco and 2 valium, and I am feeling great.

My question is, will the Norco be able to completely stop the withdrawal of the Opana and Oxy? So far, I feel fine, but I did take more than prescribed just for today since the pain was too intense. I don't plan to take that much going forward.

I absolutely HATE being dependent on any drug, and these strong opiates are both physically and psychologically addicting. I can never be without some kind of pain reliever due to MS, but I do want to minimize the amount I have to take. I find that if I do not have meds I cannot function. I am a working actress and it is very demanding work and the work days are usually over 12 hours. With pain meds and valium, I am able to do the work -- for now.

I really hate being dependent upon this stuff. It seems that it is the first thing I think about in the morning -- and has become a top priority since without them I'm useless.

Would love to hear about whether Norco is a good replacement for Opana and Oxy. Any thoughts, advice, etc. will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! Taz

Hi Taz. Sorry that you have to put up with MS. If I understand you are saying that you will need opiate pain meds from now on, but the Opana and oxycodone are to strong. The hydrocodone is addictive as is the valium. But hydrocodone is not as strong as what you were taking, and the valium, a benzodiazepine, is very synergistic with any opiate/opioid. It could hold you until your body adjust to the lower strength or you might find yourself having to take more of the hydrocodone than prescribed. If that occurs then you have to worry about the APAP intake.

I hope the best for you!
